The Comets (24-3) are headed to their third ASC title game in five seasons and will play for the trophy at 6 p.m. Saturday against Louisiana College, a surprise 85-79 winner over UT Tyler in the other semifinal. UTD won the ASC crown in 2013 and 2015.
UTD boasted a pair of 20-point scorers in the win over the Cru as the Comets pulled away in the fourth quarter by as many as 17 points before UMHBÂ got five points in the final minute.
Kayla Reinhart led all scorers with 22 points while
Alyssa Crockett finished with 20 points as UTD matched a program record with its 11th consecutive victory.
Leading 44-39 after three quarters, the Comets got back-to-back three-pointers from Crockett and Reinhart to open the final frame and never looked back as UTD went 4-for-7 from three-point range and 9-for-10 from the foul line over the final 1:35 to secure a trip back to the ASC title contest. The Comets grabbed their largest lead of the evening with 5:24 left to play after Crockett and Reinhart again went back-to-back from long distance to lift UTD to a 58-41 advantage, capping a 14-2 run by the Comets to open the period.Â
The Comets finished the win shooting just 37.5 percent (21-of-56) from the field after a sluggish start, but would dominate the boards. UTD out-rebounded the Cru, 46-29, and would force 18 turnovers. The Comets were 5-of-18 (27.8%) from three-point range, going 1-for-11 in the first three-quarters, but were an impressive 22-of-28 (78.6%) from the foul line.
Reinhart was 7-for-13 from the floor and 6-for-8 from the line while adding six rebounds. Crockett finished 5-for-13 overall and was 8-for-10 from the stripe with seven rebounds. Point guard
