Compliance- Prospective Comets

Future Comets: Prospective Student-Athletes (PSA)

Inspiring champions of today and leaders of tomorrow. The mission of The University of Texas at Dallas Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is to champion a balanced approach of personal development, academic success, community engagement, and Athletics competition in support of the mission of the University. The University of Texas at Dallas aims to provide competitive opportunities to students, which foster physical, social, and emotional benefits along with a sense of sportsmanship. In pursuit of this, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics emphasizes the development of the student-athlete's mind, body, and spirit in a manner complementary to the academic program and places special importance on the collegiate experience of the student-athlete. Student-athletes are reminded that above all, the main purpose of attending the University is to obtain an education.

UT Dallas is committed to institutional control of the athletics program with regard to all rules and regulations established by the NCAA, by the conferences of which UT Dallas is a member, and by the University. The institution is responsible for monitoring all aspects of its athletics programs to ensure compliance, including recruiting. If any areas in which a failure to maintain compliance with NCAA rules and regulations are identified, violations will be reported to the University, conference, and the NCAA. In such cases, UT Dallas will fully cooperate with the NCAA and take the appropriate corrective measures. This responsibility is a collective endeavor that is shared by athletics department staff, student-athletes, University administration, individuals and groups representing the athletics interests of the institution, and prospective student-athletes.

It is each individual's responsibility to positively commit to all University, conference, and NCAA policies, procedures, and legislation. It is expected that everyone involved with our Athletic Department will adhere to all compliance procedures and guidelines.  All constituents are encouraged to ASK before ACTING should they need assistance or clarification.

Prospective Student-Athlete. A prospective student-athlete is a student who has started classes for the ninth grade. In addition, a student who has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospective student-athlete, if the institution provides such an individual (or the individual's relatives or friends) any financial assistance or other benefits that the institution does not provide to prospective students generally.     (b) The individual participates in a regular-squad practice or competition at a four-year collegiate institution.

Recruiting: Recruiting is any solicitation of a prospective student-athlete or a prospective student-athlete's relatives [or legal guardian(s)] by an institutional staff member or by a booster for the purpose of securing the prospective student-athlete's enrollment and ultimate participation in the institution's intercollegiate athletics program.

However, an institutional staff member or booster who is approached by a prospective student-athlete or the prospective student-athlete's relatives or legal guardian(s) at any location shall not use a contact, provided the encounter was not prearranged and the staff member or booster does not engage in any dialogue in excess of a greeting and takes appropriate steps to immediately terminate the encounter.
