TYLER, TX (04.30.16) - For the second time this weekend, the UT Dallas softball team pulled off an extra-inning victory as the Comets scored four runs in the 8th Saturday night en route to a 6-4 win over Louisiana College in an elimination game in the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament.
The Comets (now 25-19) matched the program record for wins in a season while junior
Lauren McLeod set a new UTD mark for victories by a pitcher (18) as UTD rallied from an early deficit to force extra frames against LC for the second time in this tournament. The Comets and Wildcats battled in an 11-inning affair Thursday morning to open the event, with UTD earning 6-5 victory in the longest game in program history.
UTD returns to the field Sunday at 11 a.m. against No. 1-ranked Texas-Tyler in a third straight elimination game. A win over the tournament-host Patriots would send the Comets to the ASC title game for the first time since 2004, the last season before the tournament expanded to six teams. Prior to the current run, UTD had never won more than two games at the ASC Tournament.
UTD opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as
Melissa Livermore led off the game with an infield single, stole second and scored on an
Aly Hudec single up the middle. However, the Comets would leave two runners on base, allowing LC to even the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the frame.
The Wildcats took a 2-1 lead in the 3rd on a pair of UTD errors, a lead that head until the top of the 7th inning.
Stefanie Polderman led off the 7th for the Comets with a single to left and the Comets then put runners on the corners after an LC error. UTD then tied the game, 2-2, on a pinch-hit RBI ground out by
Sarah Morales.
With two outs in the 8th, the Comets then exploded for four runs, thanks to a pair of Wildcat errors. UTD plated the go-ahead run on a single by Polderman over the LC shortstop that was then misplayed by the Wildcat center fielder, allowing
Sara Navarro to score. The Comets added an RBI single by
Kendall Moore before tacking on two insurance runs on the second LC error of the inning.
LC scored two runs in the bottom of the frame, but never put the tying run on base.
Already the program record holder for career wins, McLeod (18-7) broke the UTD record for victories in a season as she tossed her second extra-inning complete game of the tournament. McLeod has also set UTD single-season records for innings pitched, shutouts and complete games this spring.
Polderman finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Hudec was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
