Late Rally Falls Short in No. 22 Comets' Extra-Inning Loss to C-M-S

TUCSON, AZ (02.11.18) - The No. 22-ranked UT Dallas baseball team closed out the 2018 Cactus Classic Sunday afternoon with a 9-8, 10-inning loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

The Comets fell in an early 8-1 hole, but answered with two runs in the 7th followed by a five-run 8th to knot the game. However, the Stags would plate a run on a ground-rule double with no outs in the bottom of the 10th frame to hand UTD it's second straight extra-inning defeat.

C-M-S plated two early runs thanks to back-to-back errors by the Comets to open the bottom half of the 1st inning. The Stags added two runs in the 3rd on a home run by Trey Smith before UTD would get on the board in 5th with a sacrifice fly by Norman Cordova, scoring Garrett Uhl. But, the Stags would counter with four runs in the bottom of the inning off three hits and another UTD error.

UTD began its rally in the 7th with an RBI triple by Uhl, scoring Luke Richter. Uhl later scored on a sac fly by Mathew Deacon. The Comets then plated five runs on five hits and two C-M-S errors in the top of the 8th. UTD used a two-run single by Richter to open the 8th inning scoring and added an RBI single by Deacon and a run on a Stag fielding error to draw within a run. The Comets knotted the game, 8-8, with a two-out Barry Casey single to center, scoring Cordova.

C-M-S ended the game in the 10th when Patrick Gavin led off the frame with a single, stole second and scored on a ground-rule double by Brandon Mitchell.
