No. 20 Comets Down LETU, 72-56, to Secure ASC East Title Outright

RICHARDSON, TX (02.15.18) - The No. 20-ranked UT Dallas women's basketball team extended its winning streak to seven straight games Thursday night as the Comets handled LeTourneau, 72-56, in American Southwest Conference East Division play.

With the win, the Comets (21-3, 15-2 ASC) continued its perfect run though the division and locked up the ASC East title outright with one game left to play in the regular season. UTD will close the regular season Saturday with a 2 p.m. home game with regionally ranked East Texas Baptist on Senior Day. With a win in that contest, the Comets would match a school record for regular-season victories, set last season.

The Comets used a 25-12 opening quarter to set to done for the night before LETU slowly trimmed the lead late in the contest. UTD was 10-for-17 (58.8%) from the field as a team in the first 10 minutes and would extend its lead to 37-20 at the break. Both teams shot better than 50 percent for the third quarter, but the Comets still found a way to extend their lead, taking an 18-point cushion, 59-41, into the final stanza.

UTD's largest lead of the night came with 5:41 remaining in the contest when Amber Terry used a jumper to give the Comets a 65-41 lead. The YellowJackets would get a pair of three-pointers late by Ashley Reed to trim UTD's margin of victory to just 16 points.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The Comets are now one victory shy of a program record for wins in a regular season (22), set last year. That team went on to post a 25-4 mark after claiming the ASC title. UTD's record for wins in a campaign is 26, set during 2014-15 season.

UTD finished the night shooting 45.2 percent (28-of-62), connecting on 5-of-17 three-pointers (29.4%), and shot 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from the free-throw line. The two teams finished even in rebounds at 46, while the Comets scored 19 points off of 15 LETU turnovers.

KEY PERFORMERS
Victoria Pena led the Comets with 20 points, adding six rebounds and six assists. Pena was 8-for-13 from the floor, hitting four treys. Raenett Hughes added 16 points as the only other UTD in double figures, going 7-for-10 formthe field with a team-high seven rebounds.
