Palmer's Walk-Off Hit Leads Comets to 6-5 Win Over Millikin

RICHARDSON, TX (03.14.18) - Junior Dylan Palmer laced a one-out single to right field in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the UT Dallas baseball team to a 6-5 win over Millikin Wednesday afternoon in non-conference play.

With runners on first and second, Palmer took a 1-0 pitch past the Millikin first baseman, allowing Connor Scruggs to easily score from second base and snap the Comets' four-game losing skid.

Both teams scored early and often as the Comets would take a 5-4 lead after the 4th. However, neither squad would add another run until the top of the 7th when the visiting Big Blue knotted the game with a leadoff walk that worked around the bases with a balk, ground ball, and an RBI ground out. After scoreless 8th and 9th frames, UTD reliever Tyler Keegan retired Millikin in order in the top of the 10th, needing nine pitches, setting up Palmer late-game heroics.

The Comets opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st on a Palmer bases-loaded sac fly to center, allowing Ryan Burciaga to score. But, Millikin evened the game in the top of the 2nd.

UTD regained the lead in the bottom of the second thanks to a solo home run by senior Rodney Corbin, the first of his career. The Big Blue then took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 3rd, before UTD knotted the game again in the bottom of the frame on a Connor Scruggs infield single, allowing Barry Casey to score. Casey opened the Comets' half of the 3rd with a triple to center.

The Big Blue (7-4) regained a slim lead in the top of the 4th, but UTD again countered in the bottom of half of the inning, picking up two runs on a Scruggs double to right center.

Comet starter Drew Thompson did not factor into the decision as tossed 4.0 innings as the first of six UTD hurlers to take the mound. Thompson gave up three earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. The Comet bullpen would then combine for 6.0 innings, allowing just one run on one hit.

Scruggs finished 4-for-4 with three RBI while Palmer was 1-for-5 with two RBI.
