BROWNWOOD, TX (03.02.18) - After taking off three weeks due to inclement weather and field conditions, the UT Dallas softball team returned the diamond on Friday for a pair of victories at Howard Payne to open American Southwest Conference play.
The Comets (2-2, 2-0 ASC) opened Friday with a close 4-3 win over host HPU and followed up with 5-0 victory over the Yellow Jackets in the night cap. The two teams will close the three-game series at 12 p.m. Saturday.
GAME 1 - UTD 4, HPU 3
The Comets took an early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the 3rd only to watch HPU knot the game in the following inning. UTD answered quickly with two runs in the 5th and held on for a 4-3 win to open the three-game ASC series.
UTD opened the scoring with a one-out double by
Elizabeth Brann, scoring
Kendra Litchfield, in the 3rd.
Stefanie Polderman then picked up the first of her three RBIs in the game with a single to right, scoring
Melissa Livermore.
After HPU scored a pair in the bottom of the 4th, the Comets regained the lead in the top of the 5th with a one-out single to left by Polderman, scoring Livermore and Brann. The Yellow Jackets plated a run in the bottom of the 5th, but would leave the bases loaded with the go-ahead run on second base.
Allie Stephens (1-1) earned the victory with five strikeouts in a complete-game performance. She scattered six hits and gave up two earned runs. Polderman was 2-for-4 with three RBI while Brann was 3-for-3 with one RBI.
GAME 2 - UTD 5, HPU 0
Sophomore transfer
Karen Crane (1-0) tossed a shutout in the second game of the day as the Comets completed the sweep with a 5-0 victory over HPU.
Crane struck out three and did not issue a walk as she picked up her first win in a Comet jersey. She got all five runs off support in the 4th frame as the Comets used six hits and a HPU error to pull away for the win.
With runners on first and third with one out in the inning,
Samantha Halliburton lifted the Comets to a 2-0 cushion with a double to right, scoring
Emily Schroeder and
Hope Griffith. Litchfield then gave UTD a 3-0 lead with a single to center, scoring Halliburton.
Melissa Livermore than brought home Litchfield from second base on a single down the left field line and then came home on a Brann single to center.
Livermore was 2-for-3 from the lead-off spot as the only UTD player with a multi-hit peformance.
