No Place Like Home For Baseball In 19-3 ASC Win Over ETBU

RICHARDSON, TX (04.27.18) - For the fifth time in its last seven home games, the UT Dallas baseball team's offense scored in the double digits, taking the first game of the final American Southwest Conference regular season series from East Texas Baptist, 19-3, Friday afternoon.

The Comets (23-15, 15-7 ASC) broke loose from a 2-2 fourth-inning tie with 13 runs over the middle three innings to finish off the Tigers (21-17, 11-11 ASC), and stay in the hunt for one of the ASC top two seeds in the post-season playoffs, which begin next weekend. UTD pounded out 17 hits, drew six walks and took advantage of 8 ETBU errors in claim the win. The two teams finish off the regular season schedule when they meet in a noon doubleheader Saturday at the UTD Baseball Complex,

Seniors Connor Scruggs and Josh Covey each had three-hit days while Scruggs drove in six runs with a home run and double. Late in the game, Coach Shane Shewmake was able to substitute for all nine starting positions, and get work for four members of the pitching staff. Senior Jamie Andriot took the win, limiting the Tigers to two runs and five hits in six innings, striking out 10 in improving to 9-2.

After getting runners into scoring position in the first two frames, UTD finally got on the board in the 3rd with a two-run shot by Scruggs. ETBU answered with its own two-run homer in the 3rd by Zach Gartner. But the Comets then racked up a six-run 4th - all unearned - with four hits, two walks and another Tiger error to take an 8-2 lead. They repeated the onslaught in the 5th, scoring six more runs on four hits and four errors.

After another single run in the 6th to make the UTD lead, 15-2, ETBU got a single run back in the 7th. But a series of substitutes and pinch hitters kept the rally going in the 8th, putting together four more runs on six more hits.
