Softball Breaks Home Run Record, Closes Regular Season

TYLER, TX (04.27.19) - The UT Dallas softball team blasted three more home runs including the squad's American Southwest Conference record sixth grand slam of the season as the Comets closed out the regular season Saturday with a pair of losses at UT Tyler.

The Comets will head into the postseason next weekend with a 16-20 overall record after road losses at UTT Saturday, 17-5 and 13-5. The 2019 ASC Championship Tournament starts Thursday on the campus of East Texas Baptist, the league's regular season champion. The Comets will serve as the No. 7 seed in this year's event and will open postseason play at 10 a.m. Thursday at sixth-seeded Howard Payne.

UTD have now hit 36 home runs this spring, breaking the previous program record of 35 during the Comets' series finale at UTT. The Comets hit a pair of long balls in Saturday's opener, including a grand slam by Jessica Vlasek, while Ravin Wilson hit the record-breaking home run during Saturday's second game.

GAME 1 - UTT 17, UTD 5 (5 inn.)
The Comets' sixth grand slam of the season came in the top of the 5th inning but it was not enough as UTD opened Saturday's twin bill at UT Tyler with a 17-5, five-inning defeat.

Wilson picked up her first home run of the day in the top of the 2nd, a solo shot, to cut an early Patriot lead to three runs, 4-1, but UTT answered with six runs in the 3rd and four more in the 4th to pull ahead 17-1.  The Comets would then use four hits in the top of the 5th, including Vlasek's grand slam with one out to complete the scoring.

Wilson finished the game 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI while Vlasek was 1-for-3 with four RBI. Hope Griffith was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

GAME 2 - UTT 13, UTD 5 (6 inn.)
The Comets once again found themselves in a deep only before dropping a 13-5, six-inning decision to UTT in the series finale.

Down 4-0 after two innings, the Comets again used a Wilson homer, her eighth of the season, with two outs in the 3rd. Wilson's two-shot which plated Elizabeth Brann, cut the Patriot advantage to 4-2.

UTT answered with five runs in the bottom of the 3rd to regain a 9-2 lead before the Comets plated three runs in the following frame. In the 4th, the Comets picked up a run on a Brann single followed by a two-run double by Lauryn Manning.

Brann was 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Emily Schroeder was 2-for-2.
