Comets Drop Midweek Matinee to McMurry in 10 Innings

RICHARDSON, TX (03.16.21) - In it's only scheduled game of the week, the UT Dallas baseball team dropped a 7-6, 10-inning decision to McMurry Tuesday afternoon in non-conference play.

The Comets (now 7-5) will not return to the diamond until next Tuesday, Mar. 16, whey they visit Texas Wesleyan for a non-conference contest. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Fort Worth.

The visiting WarHawks (1-9) opened up with a three-run home run by Ryan Potter in the top of the 1st to snag an early lead. However, UTD answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame with one run on double play ground ball and the second on a wild pitch to trim the McMurry lead to 3-2.

After two scoreless innings, the WarHawks added to their lead with a single run in the top of the 4th and another run in the 5th to extend their lead to 5-3. The Comets rallied in the bottom of the 5th with two runs to claw back within a single tally. Jacob Perry drew a one-out walk, stole second and third, and came home on a McMurry throwing error to account for the Comets' first run of the frame. Zac Vorst would later collect his team-leading third triple of the spring with two outs, scoring A.J. Liu.

The Comets would eventually knot the game, 5-5, with two outs in the bottom of the 7th when Vorst blasted a solo home run, his second of the season, that curled around the left field foul pole. However, the WarHawks regained a one-run lead in the top of the 9th thanks to three wild pitches. With two outs in the bottom of the 9th, Liu would send the game to extra innings with a homer to left center, his second of the year.

McMurry would plate what proved to be the game-winning run with two outs in the top of the 10th when Reed Hodges used a seeing-eye single up the middle to plate Mike Gonzales from second base. The Comets attempt an extra-inning rally, but would close the game with two runners on base.

The Comets finished the loss with seven hits, Vorst closing the day 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. UTD sent six pitchers to the mound.
