RICHARDSON, TX (03.05.21) - The UT Dallas baseball team used a late rally in the opener and early scoring in the second game of the day as the Comets picked up two home wins over Sul Ross State, 4-3 and 12-2, in American Southwest Conference play Saturday afternoon.
The Comets (now 5-1, 4-1 ASC) will close the three-game weekend series with the Lobos (now 3-4, 1-4 ASC) with a single game at 12 p.m. Saturday at the UTD Baseball Field.
GAME 1 - UTD 4, SRSU 3
The Comets scored four runs, three with two outs, in the bottom of the 6th to rally for a 4-3 win over the visiting Lobos to open Friday's doubleheader.
The Lobos opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the 2nd and extended their lead to 3-0 in the 5th as SRSU started Sam Russell limited the Comets through the first five frames. However, UTD used four hits and a Lobo error in the 6th to turn the tides and rally for the victory.
Jacob Perry got things started with a one-out single up the middle and would move to third base on a failed pickoff attempt. Perry would then score on a sacrifice fly
Ramon Garza for the Comets' first run of the game.
A.J. Liu then doubled to left center and
Zac Vorst walked to give UTD a pair of base runners. After a pitching change and a wild pitch,
Marcos Villegas knotted the game with a two-run double to right. Villegas was given third on a balk before coming home on a
Deylan Moreno single to center.
Carter Cochrane (2-0) scattered six hits through 6.0 innings of work, giving up three earned runs with four strikeouts.
Orion Drymond picked up his third save of the season with perfect 7th, needed just 11 pitches.Â
GAME 2 - UTD 12, SRSU 2
The Comets' momentum carried over into the second game as they would take a 9-2 lead after three innings en route to a 12-2 victory over SRSU in the night cap.
UTD opened the scoring with an RBI groundout by Liu in the 1st, plating Perry. Garza would later score in the inning on a Lobo error. The Lobos answered with two runs of their own in the top of the 2nd to knot the game before the Comets grabbed the lead for good in the bottom of the 2nd with a sacrifice fly by
Chandler Boyd, scoring
Hunter Cheek.
The Comets then plated six runs on just three hits in the 3rd, taking advantage of back-to-back hit batters to open the frame. Vorst opened the six-run inning with a double down the left field line, scoring Garza.
Tristin Marcus then brought home Liu with an infield single to give the Comets a 5-2 cushion. Cheek, Moreno and Boyd each added RBI in the frame while the Comets also got a run on a wild pitch.
UTD tacked on three final runs in the 8th, including a two-run single by Liu.
Comet started
Ryan Vera did not factor in the decision, giving up two runs on five hits in a 3.0-inning start. Reliever
Kenny Garza (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win as he finished the game, tossing 6.0 scoreless frames with six strikeouts. Garza retired the first two batters in each of his first five frames in an impressive outing.
