RICHARDSON, TX (04.13.21) - The UT Dallas baseball team earned its third win in four outings Tuesday afternoon as the Comets claimed a 9-5 home win over McMurry in non-conference play.
The Comets (now 16-8) avenged an early season loss to McMurry and will travel to Abilene next Tuesday for a rubber match with the War Hawks. Before then, however, UTD will visit league-leading Louisiana College this weekend for a crucial three-game American Southwest Conference series. The Comets and Wildcats are currently slated to open the set with a 2 p.m. doubleheader in Pineville, La., Friday, weather permitting.
UTD used a pair of big innings to account for all nine of its runs in Tuesday's victory, plating four runs in the 2nd and five more in the 5th before the visiting War Hawks made a late charge.
Daniel Zamora belted a three-run blast in the 2nd while
Peter Dyar added a three-run shot of his own in the 5th as the Comets got six of their nine runs off the long ball.
Zamora's team-leading fifth homer of the season opened the scoring with one out in the bottom of the 2nd as his rocket to left center scored
Hunter Cheek and
Marcos Villegas to give UTD a 3-0 lead. The Comets later added an RBI infield single by
Jacob Perry, scoring Dyar, in the frame to push the lead to 4-0.
After giving back a run in the top of the 5th, the Comets scored five runs on just single hit as they pulled away in the bottom of the inning. Loading the bases with three straight walks to open the frame, UTD regained a four-run lead on a War Hawk wild pitch, allowing
A.J. Liu to score from third. Villegas then plated
Zac Vorst with a sacrifice fly to center before Dyar belted his second home run of the spring, scoring Cheek and Zamora.
The War Hawks (now 8-18) scored one run in the 7th, two in the 8th and a final run in the 9th, and had the game-tying run on deck when the game came to an end.
Zamora and Dyar each finished 2-for-3 with three RBU while Villegas and Vorst were 1-for-3. Starter
Joshua Wood (1-1) picked up the win, tossing the first 2.0 scoreless innings in a bullpen day for the Comets.
