ABILENE, TX (04.21.21) - The UT Dallas baseball team had its season-long five game winning snapped on Tuesday with a 20-13 non-conference road loss at McMurry.
Outfielder
Marcos Villegas homered twice as the Comets (now 19-9) jumped out to an early lead before the host War Hawks (9-21) used to big innings late to rally for the victory.
Villegas launched his first long ball of the afternoon, a two-run shot in the top of the 1st to cap a four-run frame for the Comets. UTD would add an RBI fielder's choice groundout by
Ramon Garza in the top of the 2nd to give the Comets a quick 5-0 cushion.
However, McMurry answered with four runs in the 3rd to draw back within a single run. The Comets responded with a sacrifice fly by Garza in the 4th and Villegas' team-leading sixth homer of the spring in the 5th, a solo shot, to extend UTD's lead to 7-4.
The War Hawks then used a pair of home runs in the bottom of the 5th before Villegas gave the Comets back a 9-7 advantage in the 6th after an RBI infield single combined with a McMurry error. The War Hawks answered with two runs in the bottom of the 6th to knot the game and added seven runs in the 7th and four more in the 8th to pull away.
Villegas closed the game 3-for-5 from the plate with five RBI, adding a run-scoring groundout in the 8th, while scoring two runs.
Keagan Vance finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and
Zac Vorst and
Nick Balley each went 2-for-5.
The Comets are scheduled to return to action this weekend with a three-game American Southwest Conference home series with LeTourneau.
