DALLAS, TX (04.30.21) - The UT Dallas men's tennis team had its 201 season come to an end Friday afternoon with a 5-2 loss to Concordia Texas in the semifinals of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament. The match was played at the SMU Indoor Facility due to rain at the UTD campus.
The ASC East champion Comets (9-9) dropped 2-of-3 doubles matches to CTX before the Tornados earned three singles wins to eliminate the Comets from the postseason event. CTX will face Hardin-Simmons for the ASC title on Saturday.
The top-flighted team of
Ashwin Vaithianathan and
John Edwards opened doubles play with an 8-5 win over CTX's Robin Van der Heijden and Joeri Bregman, but the Tornados answered with back-to-back wins at No. 2 (8-3) and No. 3 (8-6) to take a 2-1 lead heading to singles.
Concordia's Adrian Munguia opened singles with a 6-3, 6-3, win over
Haydn Steffes to push the Tornado lead to 3-1 before Edwards claimed the Comets' lone single victory, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2 over Van der Heijden.
The Tornados added a straight-set wins at No. 6 (6-3, 7-5) and three-set victory at No. 4 (2-6, 6-1, 6-2) to complete the team victory.
After Saturday's championship match, Edwards recognized as a member of the All-Tournament Team.
