RICHARDSON, TX (02.12.22) - The UT Dallas softball team has equaled the best start in program history, improving to 5-0 on the young season after a 10-2, six-inning home win over LeTourneau Saturday afternoon in ASC play.
The Comets (5-0, 3-0 ASC) completed the three-game weekend sweep of LETUÂ with Saturday's lop-sided victory, downing the YellowJackets by scores of 5-2 and 4-3 on Friday. Thanks to an early ASC bye week, UTD will not return to action until Tuesday, Feb. 22, with a 12 p.m. non-conference home doubleheader against St. Thomas.
After falling behind early, UTD would plate four runs in the bottom of the 1st to take control of the contest. Down 1-0,
Avery Markley single through the left side of the LETU infield, plating lead-off hitter
Ashley Ambrosy to knot the game with one out.
Cole Johnson then gave the Comets the lead with a triple down the right field line, scoring Markley. Johnson later scored on a
Sarah Lewis single up the middle. The Comets added their fourth run of the frame on a bases-loaded walk drawn by
Jordan Evans.
The Comets added a run in the 2nd on a sacrifice fly by
Megan Todd before LETU would counter with a single run in the top of the 3rd to cut the UTD lead to 5-2. Markley then picked up her second RBI of the afternoon with a sac fly of her own in the bottom of the 3rd to give the Comets back a four-run cushion. After two scoreless frames, UTD would wrap up the run-rule victory with four runs in the bottom of the 6th inning.
Markley opened the Comets' half of the 6th with a double to left and after UTD loaded the bases with a single and a walk, both Markley and Johnson came home on a single by
Alyssa Ledesma. Marissa Mejia would later draw another bases-loaded walk for the Comets before the game ended on a LETU error.
Emilie Hoelscher (2-0) earned her second complete-game victory of the series, scattering eight hits. Hoelscher struck out seven YellowJackets and issues just one walk. Markley finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Lewis and John each had three-hit performances.
The Comets' 5-0 start matches the 2017 squad's best performance to open a new season. That squad would go 10-1 before eventually winning the program's first-ever ASC championship.
