LOS ANGELES, CA (03.13.22) – The bats came to life for the UTD Softball team Sunday afternoon as the Comets took a pair of "run rule" shortened games at Occidental College, topping the Tigers, 11-3, in the six-inning opener, then 10-2 in a five-inning finale.
The 14-3 start for the Comets is the team's best since the 2017 American Southwest Conference season. UTD travels up the West Coast Monday to finish their Spring Break trip with a twilight doubleheader at La Verne starting at 6 pm (Central).
The Comet bats were unstoppable as UTD pounded out 25 hits in just 11 innings of work. Third baseman
Megan Todd led the attack with a 5-for-7 afternoon, driving in five runs in the sweep.
GAME 1: UTD 11, OCCIDENTAL 3 (6 innings)
The Comets scored early and often in a "run rule"-shortened opener against the Tigers. UTD had a 6-0 lead after just two innings and then tacked on a four-run 6
th inning to put the game on ice.
Meanwhile, starting pitcher
McKenzie Cutbirth (3-1) was spinning a scoreless gem in the circle. The freshman from Klein gave up just one hit in a five-inning start to pick up the win, striking out four and lowering her earned run average to 2.26. Occidental did score three runs after she left, but all three were unearned after a pair of Comet errors.
Todd and center fielder
Avery Markley combined for five hits – including two doubles – and driove in six runs. Freshman
Megan Cavazos came off the bench to blast a three-run home run in the 6
th that put the game out of reach.
Todd delivered a double to center field to drive in a pair of runs in the 1
st, then Markley followed with a 3RBI double in the 2
nd and came home on Todd's double to make it 6-0. Markley scored a single run in the 4
th on a
Sarah Lewis ground out. Lewis then added to her RBI total, driving in
Jordan Evans in the 6
th before Cavazos went deep with her three-run shot.
GAME 2: UTD 10, OCCIDENTAL 2 (5 innings)
The Comets picked up right where they left off in the second game of the doubleheader, scoring three runs on four hits in the top of the 1st and cruising to another shortened win.
Celeste Soliz sparked the attack in the 1st, driving in Marley and Todd with a single to center field. A
Nicole Peters single and a bases loaded walk made it 4-0, UTD, before the Tigers ever swung a bat.
UTD then stretched its lead to 9-1 in a five-run 4th on RBI hits from Todd, Soliz, Peters and
Alyssa Ledesma. The Comets tacked on another run in the 5th to stretch the lead to eight runs before Emily Hoelscher struck out the side in the bottom of the frame to secure the first win of the season for Marissa Meija.
