BELTON, TX (03.18.22) - Just days after being shut out for the first time in almost 12 months, the 7th-ranked UT Dallas baseball team turned the tables and took out its frustrations on Mary Hardin-Baylor Friday night, powering past the Cru, 6-0, to open a three-game American Southwest Conference series.
UTD (16-2, 9-1 ASC) jumped out to an early lead and Comet pitching made it stand up by scattering just six hits and striking out 10 UMHB hitters. Ironically, it was UMHBÂ (8-8, 4-6 ASC)Â that shut out the Comets, 5-0, on March 27, 2021, the last time the Comets had been held scoreless until falling last Sunday in a non-conference matchup with North Park (IL) in Florida.
The Comets and Cru will wrap up their ASC series Saturday with a 12 pm doubleheader at Red Murff Field.
Starter
Dylan Hugley (W, 2-0) went six innings, striking out five, before giving way to the trio of
Jake Jennings,
Brett Huff and
Kenny Garza. The bullpen went the final three innings and struck out five more while allowing just one hit in the final three innings.
Meanwhile, the Comet hitters were back in sync after the North Park one-hitter. UTD pounded out 12 base hits against four UMHB pitchers, including four doubles and a
Deylan Moreno home run that broke the game open with a three-run 2nd inning.
Ramon Garza went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles while Moreno,
A.J. Liu and
Zac Vorst all had multi-hit games.
Before Moreno's two-run shot, the Comets got a pair of doubles from Liu and Vorst and led, 3-0. In the 3rd, Garza doubled and came around to score on a Liu base hit. UTD tacked on two more in the top of the 9th as Liu doubled,
Marcos Villegas walked and Vorst brought them both home with another double.
