JACKSON, MS (04.29.22) - The UT Dallas softball team dropped a pair of close games to host No. 5-ranked Belhaven Friday afternoon as the two squads opened a three-game ASC series. The Comets suffered a 4-3 walk-off loss in the first game of the day before being shutout by the Blazers, 2-0, in the late game.
The Comets (23-16, 15-14 ASC) continue to hold on to fifth place in the ASC standings despite Friday's pair of defeats and will close the regular season with a 2 p.m. single game with the Blazers on Saturday
GAME 1 - BU 4, UTD 3
Avery Markley collected three RBI for the Comets before host Belhaven earned a walk-off victory in a 4-3 decision to kick off Friday's twin bill.
Markley opened the scoring in the top of the 3rd with a bases-loaded infield single, scoring
Celeste Soliz, but the Blazers countered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead. Markley then plated
Alexia Mullen and
Jordan Evans with a one-out double to left in the top of the 5th to knot the game.
After a scoreless 6th, the Blazers used three consecutive one-out singles in the bottom of the 7th to ean the win.
Markley accounted for two of the Comets' six hits in the loss, going 2-for-3.
GAME 2 - BU 2, UTD 0Â
The Comets managed just two hits in a 2-0 shutout defeat to Belhaven in Friday's second game.
In the top of the 2nd, the Comets put runners on the corners after a walk by
Myah Cortina followed by a single by
Morgan Valentino, but UTD could not dent the scoreboard. The Blazers then pushed two runs across the plate in the bottom of the frame for the only offense of the contest.
The Comets got a pair of runners on base to open the 3rd, but a costly double play ended the UTD rally. The Comets managed just two more base runners for the rest of the contest, including a Markley single in the 6th.
