RICHARDSON, TX (04.08.22) - The nationally-ranked UT Dallas baseball team continued lighting up the scoreboard Friday afternoon, dominating the University of the Ozarks, 18-3, in the opening game of an American Southwest Conference weekend series.
The Comets (21-6, 14-5 ASC) claimed their fourth straight win, assaulting the Eagles (8-19, 7-12 ASC) with a 20-hit assault that included six extra base hits. During the four-game stretch - which included an ASC sweep at Sul Ross last weekend - UTD has put up 75 hits and scored 62 runs in just 33 innings of action. The Comets are now hitting .335 as a team with 11 hitters boasting batting averages of .300 or better.
UTD and Ozarks finish up the three-game series Saturday with a 12 pm doubleheader at the UTD Baseball Field.
Eight of the nine Comet starters had multi-hit games with catcher
Deylan Moreno leading the way with a 4-for-6 afternoon that included a pair of doubles. Second baseman
Ramon Garza (now hitting .404) belted his sixth home run of the year while
A.J. Liu,
Zac Vorst and
Hunter Cheek were a combined 7-for-14 and drove in 10 runs.
Starter
Dylan Hugley (4-1) picked up the win, scattering 8 hits and striking out five in the first nine-inning complete game of the season for the Comets. Four of the hits he gave up actually came in the 3rd inning when Ozarks jumped out to a short-lived 3-0 lead. It didn't last long.
After spotting the Eagles to the early advantage, UTD got a single run back in its half of the 3rd when Liu singled home leadoff hitterÂ
Brayshon Savage. The Comets then tied the game up in the 4th on a balk and a
Keagan Vance RBI single before doubling up the score at 6-3 on the Garza shot over the left field wall. After that, it was all Comets as UTD added four more runs in the 5th and then blew the game open in the 7th with a 6-hit, 8-run frame, sending 13 hitters to the plate.
