Comets Close Season with 2-1 Loss to McMurry in ASC Tourney

CLEVELAND, TX (05.05.22) - The UT Dallas softball team had its season come to a close Thursday morning with a 2-1 loss to McMurry in the opening of the 2022 ASC Softball Championship Tournament, hosted Belhaven at University Field on the campus of Delta State.

ASC TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

Making their first appearance in the ASC Tournament since 2019, the Comets wrapped up the spring with a 23-18 overall record after Thursday's narrow defeat. After falling behind early, UTD evened the game in the 4th and had the game-winning run on base in the bottom of the 7th.

The War Hawks opened the scoring in the top of the 1st when Emily Michki plated Angelica Abila with a single to left. Avery Markley would knot the game, 1-1, with an RBI single to right in the 4th, scoring Ashley Ambrosy, but McMurry countered with a run on a sacrifice bunt in the top of the 5th.

The Comets had chances earlier in the game, loading the bases in both the 2nd and 3rd innings, but could not come up with a key hit to bring anyone home either time. Markley and Megan Todd opened the 3rd with back-to-back singles and Cole Johnson worked a walk with no one out, but three straight pop flies ended the threat. The Comets then made a late rally attempt in the bottom of the 7th with a two-out hit batter, followed by a single to left by Johnson. However, Marissa Mejia's pinch hit line drive was chased down by the McMurry center fielder to end the game.

The Comets matched McMurry with nine base hits. Markley finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI while Ambrosy was also 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base. Comet pitcher Emilie Hoelscher (8-8) suffered the loss, giving up two earned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts.
