Comets Start Season 4-0 in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The UT Dallas softball team finished its season-opening trip to Memphis with a 4-0 record after defeating Transylvania 4-1 and and Webster 12-3 in five innings at Rhodes Softball Field on Saturday.

Against the Pioneers (0-1), Emilie Hoelscher struck out a career-high nine batters while walking three and allowing four hits, to move to 2-0 on the year. Transy pitcher Carlee Jeter allowed eight hits, two walks and struck out five in the loss.

The Comets took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when second baseman Jordan Evans led off with a base hit and scored on a single by shortstop Erin Ledesma.

The Pioneers tied the game in the third on a RBI-single by Abby Frazier after Hadlee Carter led off with a walk. Senior catcher Megan Todd blasted a three-run home run in the fifth to give the Comets the 4-1 final score.

UTD got off to hot start against the Gorlocks (0-1), plating six runs in the top of the first. The Comets had six hits in the inning, including a two-run double off the bat of Todd. Evans and Ledesma also drew bases loaded walks. Webster scored one in the first, but freshman third baseman Addison Caddell answered in the second with a two-run homer to go up 8-1.

The teams added a run each on sacrifice flies in the bottom of the third and the top of the fourth. Todd extended the advantage to 12-2 with her second three-run blast of the day in the top of the fifth. Webster added a final run in the fifth when Jaelin Holdaway led off with a triple and scored on a ground ball.

Sophomore McKenzie Cutbirth (2-0) struck out six batters, allowing seven hits and two earned runs to garner the win.

UT Dallas Notes
- Todd hit her 15th and 16th career home runs, moving into fifth place on the Comet career list. She finished the day with three extra base hits and eight RBI.
- Caddell went 3-for-5 with a home run, double, two runs scored and three runs batted in. 
- Evans was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, three walks, one driven in and a stolen base.
- Ledesma and right fielder Claire Pollack recorded a hit in both contests.

Transylvania Notes
- Ry'Ann Tharp went 1-for-2 with a stolen base and sacrifice bunt.
- Frazier , Stella Wulker and Emily Hestand each recorded a base hit.
- Annie Schuck also had a sac bunt.

Webster Notes
- The Gorlock pitchers combined to allow eight hits, 11 earned runs and nine walks.
- Holdaway went 3-for-3 with a triple and all three runs scored.
- Kaley Adzick was 2-for-3.
- Katie Croxall drove in two runs.

The Comets will host Ottawa (Kan.) on Saturday, February 18 in a double-header at noon.
