Comets Split With Tornados, Win Series

AUSTIN, Texas - The UT Dallas baseball team claimed its fourth consecutive American Southwest Conference series win after a double-header split against Concordia Texas at Gardner-Boggs Field on Saturday.

The Comets (16-10, 9-6 ASC) won the first game 3-2 in seven innings, while the Tornados (16-11, 9-6 ASC) took game two 10-5.

Concordia took a 2-0 lead in the opener in the bottom of the first with back-to-back RBI doubles from Brandon Goynes and Chris Morrow. UTD tied it in the sixth when center fielder Jaeger Self and first baseman Robert Hines singled and moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Third baseman Dylan Bivins followed with a double, scoring Self and Hines.

Daniel Zamora drew a pinch hit walk to start the seventh and was bunted over by Keagan Vance. Self knocked in Zamora with base hit to right field, which proved to be the winning run.

Reliever Caleb Vuono took the mound in the bottom of the seventh. He walked the first batter before record three straight outs to earn his second save of the year.

Game two was scoreless until the top of the fourth where Self led off with a single followed by walks issued to Grayson Coltharp and Robert Hines. Bivins drove in Self with a sacrifice fly to left field and Luke Finn executed a squeeze bunt, plating Coltharp.

The Tornados tied it at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning with two-run double from third baseman Matthew Armes. The home team took the lead with two more runs in the fifth and two in the sixth. A two-run single by Zach Seigrist highlighted a three-run seventh for the Tornados, going up 9-2.

Hines connected on a two-run double in the eighth to cut the deficit to 9-4. Concordia tacked on another run in the bottom of the frame and Self knocked in pinch runner Garrett Neeley with a sac fly in the top of the ninth for the final run of the game.
