Comet Softball Splits on Senior Day

RICHARDSON, Texas - The UT Dallas softball team split Sunday's American Southwest Conference double-header with LeTourneau to win the series at UTD Softball Field Sunday afternoon.

The visiting YellowJackets (23-14, 13-11 ASC) won the first game 2-0 in eight innings, while the Comets (22-15, 13-11 ASC) rebounded to take the nightcap 3-2.

Before the games six UTD seniors were honored - Jordan Evans, Marisa Mejia, Jordan Rasmussen, Emilie Hoelscher, Megan Todd and Sarah Lewis.

In the opener, both teams were scoreless through the regulation seven innings. LeTourneau came through in the top of the eighth by starting the inning with the bases loaded. After a pop up for the first out, two runs crossed the plate after a RBI-fielder's choice by Murphy Williams and an error.

YellowJacket pitcher Hailee Leger (8-7) earned the win with an eight-hit, four strikeout shutout. Hoelscher struck out eight, allowing six hits, one earned run and two walks.

In the second game, Comet catcher Megan Todd singled and was ran for by Riley Westmoreland, who scored on an error in the third. LETU tied the game in the fourth when Kenna Hendry drove in Graci Hart with a double to left field.

UTD regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth when third baseman Holly Selldin drew a bases loaded walk. Hendry led the sixth off by getting hit by a pitch,w as bunted over by Rylie Shipp and scored on a base hit by Callie Poore to tie it back up at 2-2.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Hoelscher beat out a slow roller to second base in her first career plate appearance. Olivia Reed and Claire Pollack followed with back-to-back singles to left field to load the bases. Lewis entered the game as a pinch hitter, and after fouling off the first two pitches, she was hit in the arm by the third, allowing Hoelscher to score the walk-off run.

The walk-off win was the second in the series for the Comets.

UTD earned a spot in the 2023 ASC Championship Tournament beginning May 11. With three games left to play, the Comets could finish the regular season anywhere between third and sixth place.
