Comets and Celts Split Double-Header

RICHARDSON, Texas - The UT Dallas softball team split a non-conference double-header with St. Thomas (Texas) with both decisions coming via run-rule at the UTD Softball Field Sunday.

The Comets (2-4) took game 14-4 in six innings, but the Celts (6-5) answered with a 15-3, five inning win.

Game 1
Senior shortstop blasted a three-run homer over the center field fence in the bottom of the second to give UTD an early lead. Catcher Chloe Bennett led the top of the fourth off with a solo shot to start a four-run, four-hit inning for the Celts.

The Comets answered in the bottom of the frame with six runs on four hits, two hit batters and two walks. Ledesma hit her second homer of the day, driving in two. In the bottom of the sixth, Addison Caddell led off with a walk and moved to second on a Cadence Hernandez base hit. Cole Johnson and Julia Guerrero followed back-to-back RBI-singles to make the game 11-4. Junior second baseman MiKayla Hoffman ended the game with a three-run homer to left field.

Marisa Mejia (1-1) earned the win with three innings of relief. She struck out one while giving up two hits and one earned run and retired the side twice. UTD outhit the UST 14-6.

Game 2
Right fielder Mallarie Munson gave the Celts a 2-0 advantage in the first inning with a two-run double. They went on to scored 10 runs in the second, which included grand slams from Bennett and center fielder Delayne Moreno. Munson hit a two-run single in the third as part of a three-run third, allowing UST to go up 15-0.

Comet catcher Celeste Soliz led the third off with a single and shortstop Blair Collier walked. Right fielder Claire Pollack knocked them in with a three-run homer over the fence in right center for the Comets' only runs of the game.

Victoria Sossaman (3-3) earned the win with eight strikeouts, two walks and four hits allowed. UTD's McKenzie Cutbirth struck out six of seven batters faced in the final two innings of the game.

UT Dallas Notes
- Ledesma became the 14th Comet to hit two home runs in the same game. She went 3-for-3 with five RBI in game one.
- Caddell was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, a walk and a hit by pitch in the opener.
- Johnson was 2-for-4 with two driven in.
- Hoffman recorded four RBI with the home run and a sacrifice fly.
- Hernandez was 2-for-2 with a walk and run scored.
- Soliz was 2-for-2 with a run scored in game two.

St. Thomas Notes
- Bennet went 3-for-5 with three runs five RBI, two homers and a double on the day.
- Moreno was 2-for-3 with two runs and four RBI in game two.
- Munson drove in four with a double and homer in game two.
- Shortstop Lindesy Gonzalez was 3-for-3 with two runs scored in the nightcap.
