Long Balls Fly as UT Dallas and UT Tyler Split Twin Bill

DALLAS - A combined 11 home runs were hit at Horner Ballpark on Friday as UT Dallas and #11/14/24 UT Tyler split a Lone Star Conference doubleheader. The Patriots (28-9 LSC) won the opener 8-5 in nine innings, while the Comets (27-10 LSC) took game two 11-7.

Game One Highlights
- Kaston Mason was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Tanner Hornback to give UTT a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
- Senior catcher Nico Fernandez doubled and scored on a base hit by Trent McCown in the bottom of the frame.
- Fernandez blasted a solo shot over the right field fence in the third inning to put UTD up 2-1.
- Mason tied it again with a fourth-inning lead-off blast to center.
- The Comets regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth after Jake Amoroso led off with a single and later scored on a Gavin Barker hit up the middle.
- Spencer Simpson recorded a three-run home run down the right field line to put the Patriots up 5-3 in the sixth.
- UTD got one run back in the bottom of the inning when Albert Garza knocked in Alex Miller.
- McCown hit a solo shot of his own, again to deep center, knotting the game up at 5-5 in the seventh and forcing extra innings.
- After a scoreless eighth inning, shortstop Drew Schmidt hit a three-run blast to left center in the top of the ninth to give UTT the victory.
- The Comets outhit the Patriots 12-8.

UT Dallas in Game One
- Fernandez was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, a RBI, home run and a double. He moved into ninth place on UTD's career runs batted in list with 98. Fernandez also threw two runners out trying to steal and went to second place with 26 for his career.
- McCown was 3-for-4 with two RBI and his league-leading 12th home run of the season.
- Barker was 2-for-4 with a RBI.
- Reliever Tag Pacot (0-3) struck out five over 4.1 innings, but took the loss.

UT Tyler in Game One
- Garrett Landry (2-1) allowed three hits, one run and struck out one in the four-inning winning relief outing.
- Schmidt was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, three RBI and two walks.
- Connor Clark was 2-for-3 with a run scored a pair of walks.
- Hornback scored and recorded three sacrifice bunts.

Game Two Highlights
- The Comets took an early 2-0 advantage in the first after RBI-singles from McCown and Chris Benavidez.
- Fernandez, Kole Kinnison and McCown hit three consecutive home runs in the bottom of the second.
- Alex Miller drove in Benavidez later in the inning to give UTD a 7-0 lead.
- The Patriots put six runs up in the third. The inning included a three-run home run by Mason and a two-run shot from Simpson.
- Peyton Peoples led off the bottom of the third with a walk and scored on a Garza double. Garza later scored on a wild pitch for a 9-6 lead.
- Connor Clark homered to left center to lead off the fourth for UTT.
- The Comets added the final two innings in the bottom of the fourth on a Peoples bunt single, plating Miller, and an error.
- UTD outhit UTT 13-9.

Comets in Game Two
- Sophomore Baley Ray (3-0) earned the victory on the mound. He gave up two hits and two walks with three strikeouts over four innings of relief.
- McCown went 2-for-3 with two RBI and his 13th home run of the year.
- Fernandez recorded his sixth home run of the season and scored twice.
- Kinnison's home run was his third of the year. He also scored twice with two hits.
- Garza went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, a double and a stolen base.
- Benavidez extended his hitting streak to 12 games by going 2-for-3. 

Patriots in Game Two
- Starter Dylan Blmoquist (2-2) last 1.2 innings, giving up seven hits and six runs in the loss.
- Simpson was 2-for-3 with two RBI and the home run.
- Catcher Cole Ketzner went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
- Hornback singled and walked twice.

Up Next
The final game of the series will be played on Saturday at 3 p.m. back on the campus on DBU.
