Butch Edge

Butch Edge became the UT Dallas men’s and women’s golf head coach in 2015.
 
In his six seasons with the Comets, Edge has mentored six All-ASC performers on the men’s side and the first eight All-ASC women's golfers in school history, including ASC Tri-Golfer and Freshman of the Year Lindy Patterson in 2018. Additionally, he has mentored the Comets to many academic accolades for both programs. In 2018, he was named the ASC Women's Golf Coach of the Year and after the 2021 campaign, he earned the league's Coach of the Year honors for women's golf.

In 2021, Edge mentored the UTD women's golf team to their first-ever ASC Championship with the Comets closing out the historic season with a 15th place finish at the NCAA D-III National Championships.
 
After his first season with the program, Edge’s men’s team was crowned NCAA Division III Academic National Champion, boasting a team grade point average over 3.75 during the 2015-16 academic year. After the 2016-17 season, three members of the UTD women’s team were named All-American Scholars by the WGCA. Since his arrival at UTD, 11 members of the women's program and five members of the men's team collected All-American Scholar recognition.

In 2021, Comet Karen Alvarez was honored with the NCAA Elite 90 Award for women's golf.
 
Prior to his arrival at UTD, Edge served as the head coach of the one of the top NCAA D-III men’s golf programs in the country while at the University of the Redlands. He spent 10 years at Redlands, serving as the men’s head coach six seasons. Each of his final five years ended with his squad ranked among the Top 16 in NCAA D-III. In 2015, Edge mentored Redlands to the top spot in the NCAA D-III Top 25 before claiming a fifth-place finish at the NCAA D-III National Tournament.
 
A 2014 and 2015 GCAA National Coach of the Year finalist, Edge led Redlands to their first SCIAC title in nearly a decade. In his six seasons as head coach, Redlands finished no worse than third at the SCIAC Tournament.  He was the SCIAC Coach of the Year in 2015  as well as 2015 NCAA D-III West Region Coach of the Year.
 
Through the 2015 season, Edge amassed more than 500 head-to-head wins for an impressive winning percentage of .781. Widely respected among the golf community, Edge is a member of the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), American Junior Golf Association (AJGA). He has served as the National Chair of the GCAA All-America Committee, Jack Nicklaus Award Committee, Palmer Cup Selection Committee, NCAA D-III West Region Chair and Regional Advisory Committee.
 
In his six years at Redlands, Edge coached 21 All-SCIAC performers, including three consecutive SCIAC Freshmen of the Year honorees (2011-13) and the SCIAC Golfer of the Year in 2014. In all, he coached nine Ping All-Americans, 14 All-West Region performers and one NCAA D-III individual champion. His players have garnered the honor of being named the Jack Nicklaus Division III Player of the Year (2014), the Phil Mickelson National Freshman of the Year (2013), and finalists for the prestigious Byron Nelson Award (2015) and Palmer Cup Team (2014, 2015).  His teams climbed to No. 1 in the national poll each of the past two seasons and ended each of his six regular seasons ranked seventh or higher. In addition, Edge coached 11 All-America Scholars and two CoSIDA First Team Academic All-Americans.
 
As an undergraduate at Redlands, Edge competed in football each of his four years and earned many prestigious awards. A team captain, he landed on the All-SCIAC and NAIA All-District 3 teams. He also boasted three straight seasons of earning Little All-Coast honors, along with NCAA and NAIA All-America accolades. His teammates named him the Most Valuable Player at defensive back as well as the squad's Most Inspirational Player. Finally, Edge was inducted into the Redlands Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame in 1990 as well as the Redlands High School Hall of Fame in 2011. He earned his bachelor's degree in Physical Education (1975) and master's degree in Education Psychology (1976).

Edge an his wife, Lisa, reside in Allen and have two children, daughter Shelby and son Sean.
