Late Goal Forces Men To Settle For Tie With Nationally-Ranked Trinity

MICHAEL DARROW'S GOAL STOOD AS A POTENTIAL GAME-WINNER UNTIL TRINITY TIED THE GAME WITH 1:13 LEFT IN REGULATION.
Box Score ABILENE, Texas (09.07.13) - The UT Dallas men's soccer team has accomplished many things in its storied history, but has never been able to accomplish one particular task - defeat naitonal Division III power Trinity University.

The 16th-ranked Tigers (2-1-0) denied the Comets (2-0-1) their first victory ever in the 15-game series that dates back more than a decade, by tying the score, 1-1, with just 1:13 left in regulation, and then held on for the double-overtime draw.

UTD then missed a golden opportunity to get the game-winner in the second 10-minute overtime period when a Michael Matthews shot off a Travis White corner kick clanked off the crossbar in the 101st minute.

It was the second draw between the two teams in the last three seasons, but Trinity still holds an 0-13-2 series record over UTD.

Senior Michael Darrow scored what looked the game game-winning goal for UTD at the 78:16 mark in the second half, dribbling the ball across the front from right to left and nailing a shot past Trinity goalkeeper Matt Cardone. But Trinity's Goncalo Santana took a feed from Victor Araujo at the 88:47 mark to tie the score and necessitate the overtime periods. UTD got the only shot in the first 10-minute period, then almost got the "golden goal" from Matthews at 101:43.

The Comet defense thwarted Trinity all afternoon long, allowing just eight total shots from the Tigers, four on goal. Trinity did not have a single shot in either of the extra periods while UTD, which had 15 total shots (three on goal) added three more scoring attempts to its total. The Comets also held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

The Comets will play their 2013 home opener Wednesday night at 7 pm against Northwood University.
