Top-Seeded Men's Soccer Ties Up UMHB, 3-3, In ASC Finale

BELTON, TX (11.01.14) - In a match between two teams headed toward next weekend's American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament regardless of the outcome, the UT Dallas men's soccer team tied up The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, 3-3, in the regular season finale.

UTD's Erick Reyes netted a goal with just under three minutes left in regulation to rally the Comets (12-3-3 overall) from 3-2 down. The two teams then played a pair of scoreless overtime periods, managing just three shots between them without another goal.

The Comets finished their ASC campaign as the conference's regular season champs, earning the right to host the Championship Tournament with a 7-1-1 ASC Mark. UMHB (7-6-3 overall, 4-2-3 ASC) could have moved up in the final seedings with a win, but settled for the No. 4 seed with the tie. UTD receives a first-round bye and will not play until an 11 am Saturday semifinal against the winner of UMHB and UT Tyler.  (Read the ASC Tournament Release HERE).

The tie snapped a six-game win streak by UTD.

The Comets took an early 1-0 lead in the Saturday finale when Michael Matthews scored his fifth goal of the season just 7:03 into the match. But a bad stretch to open the second half found UTD looking up at the Cru. Just 1:33 into the second period, UMHB's Caleb Latson tied the game up and Ben Hammond gave UMHB a 2-1 lead with a penalty kick goal in the 59th minute.

Roman Rodriguez got the Comets even again at 70:08 on a header goal off a Julian Torres score, but the Cru moved back in front in the 80th minute on a McKenna Cook goal. Reyes bailed UTD out late, netting the tying goal in the 88th minute.

UTD had a great chance to claim the win in the final minute of the first overtime period, but Rodriguez chipped a shot in close over the crossbar.
