RICHARDSON, TX (11.16.14) - One night after picking up its first-ever NCAA Division III National Tournament win, the UT Dallas men's soccer team had its season come to an end with a hard-fought 1-0 loss to No. 2-ranked Trinity in the second round Sunday.
The visiting Tigers (now 23-1 - with the one loss being to UTD earlier this season) scored the only goal of the game in the 23rd minute when Kellen Reid picked up a loose ball in the UTD box and drilled a shot past a diving
Joseph Weber. The Comets (14-5-3) had two goals waived off in the second half, one on penalty in the 55th minute and a second on a offsides call in the 66th minute.
The Comets finished the match with 10 shots, three of which were on goal, with
Omar Jaroun,
Jason Horvath,
Danny Meyer and
Chase Withrow ending with two each. Weber made five saves in a full 90 minutes in goal.
For Trinity, the Tigers ended with 17 shots, seven on goal, with Johnny Lawson lead the match with four shots. TU keeper Matt Cardone made three saves in the shutout performance.
UTD advanced to the second round of the NCAA D-III National Tournament after a 2-1 win over Pomona-Pitzer Saturday. The Comets are now 1-3 all-time in the national tournament with all losses coming to Trinity. UTD fell to the Tigers in the opening round in 2004 and 2007.
