Rafael Farley recorded his fourth straight 20-point game Saturday afternoon as he lifted the UT Dallas men's basketball team to a 74-68 road victory over Sul Ross State in American Southwest Conference play.
The Comets (now 7-2, 3-2 ASC) collected their fourth consecutive win as Farley ended the afternoon 9-for-21 from the field, hitting three three-pointers, to match a season-high with 27 points against SRSU. Farley, who has scored in double figures in all nine games for the Comets this season, added a season-high 14 rebounds for his fourth "double-double" of the season.
Matthew Medell was the only other UTD player in double figures with 10 points while
Kyle Coulter had nine points and
Nolan Harvey added eight points.
The two teams traded blows early in the game before the Comets outscored SRSU, 26-3, over a span of 11 minutes midway through the first half. Leading the Lobos, 12-11, with 14:11 left before half, Farley drained back-to-back three-pointers to kick start a 13-0 run by the Comets, giving UTD a 25-11 with just over eight minutes to play before halftime. After giving up a field goal to the Lobos, UTD then scored nine consecutive points to snag its first 20-point lead of the, 34-13, after an old-fashioned three-point play by
Zach Helmberger with 5:44 on the clock. After a Lobo free throw, Farley hit back-to-back buckets to give the Comets their largest lead of the game, 38-14, with 3:11 remaining in the half. However, SRSU would finish the half on a 7-1 run to trim the Comet lead to just 17 points, 39-21, at the break.
The Lobos opened the second half strong, drawing within 12 points, 46-34, with 14:46 remaining after a pair of free throws by Alex Harrison, but the Comets responded with a 9-0 run to hold off their host. The Lobos would cut the lead to single digits in the final minutes of the game, clawing within six points, 66-60, with 1:30 remaining after four quick points by Luke Taylor, but the Comets hit enough free throws down the stretch (5-for-9) to hold on for the victory.
The Comets ended the afternoon 26-of-58 from the field (44.8%), hitting 8-of-21 three-pointers (38.1%), and shot just 58.3 percent (14-of-24) from the foul line. UTD out-rebounded the Lobos, 47-33.
UTD returns to action Monday afternoon to open a stretch of three-straight ASC home games. The Comets will host Howard Payne at 5 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
