BROWNWOOD, TX (01.29.15) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team hit a season-low five three-pointers as the Comets were handed a 78-66 road loss at Howard Payne Thursday night in American Southwest Conference play.
The Comets (now 12-6, 7-6 ASC) shot better than 46 percent from the field, but made just 5-of-23 three-pointers (21.7%) as UTD had its two-game winning streak come to an end. UTD will look to bounce back Saturday afternoon as the Comets host Sul Ross State. Game time is 3 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
UTD opened the game 10-0, getting early three-pointers from
Kyle Coulter and
Matthew Medell, and looked to be en route to a three-game winning streak. The Comets would hit three of their five three-pointers in the first six minutes before HPU battled back.
The Jackets grabbed their first lead at 16-15 on a J Bailey lay up with 11:16 left in the first half and secure the lead for good with 9:30 remaining before the break as Ty Davis hit a three-pointer to lift HPU to a 19-17 advantage. The Jackets would grab their first double-digit lead with 2:18 left in the half, 34-24, before taking a 37-28 lead into the locker room.
The Comets were only able to get as close as seven points, 44-37, with 16:54 remaining after a Medell layup, but HPU would maintain a double-digit lead for the majority of the second, half.
UTD was 24-of-52 (46.2%) from the field and hit 13-of-21 (61.9%) free throws.
