No. 9 Cal Lutheran Topples No. 14 Comets In Regional Semifinal

THOUSAND OAKS, CA (11.14.15) - One day after picking up the program's second-ever NCAA postseason victory, the No. 14-ranked UT Dallas volleyball team suffered the same end to its season as the Comets did in 2013, falling in three sets to No. 9-ranked California Lutheran in the NCAA Division III Regional semifinals.

The Comets, who end their season with a 31-3 overall record, advanced to the national round of 32 Friday night with a 3-1 win over Whitworth University, setting up a re-match of UTD's 2013 regional semifinal match up with the Regals. UTD had a hard throughout the match to gain control, falling behind 2-0 after dropping the first two sets 25-16 and 25-18. The Comets made CLU work for the sweep however as UTD rallied from down 24-21 in the third set before falling 29-27.

Junior Michelle Toro led the Comets with 15 kills, hitting .560, and adding a pair of blocks. Junior Holyn Handley, the Comets' hero in their win over Whitworth Friday, finished with 13 kills, along with a match-high 12 digs and three blocks. Senior setter Kayla Jordan, the NCAA D-III leader in assists per set, finished with 33 assists, averaging 11.0 per set.

The Comets hit just .147 as a team against CLU, their second-lowest hitting percentage of the season. UTD managed just four blocks and had four aces.

With the loss, UTD had its 24-match winning streak come to an end on victory shy of the program record. The 2009 Comet squad posted 25 straight wins to open the season before falling in the first round of the national tournament.

For CLU (now 27-5), Michelle Lawrence had 13 kills while Allie Eason finished with 10 kills. Setter Jamie Smith dished out 39 assists, averaging 13.0 per set. The Regals will square off with No. 1-ranked Washington-St. Louis Sunday in the regional final with a berth into the NCAA D-III Elite Eight on the line.
