Men's Soccer Heading to San Antonio to Open NCAA D-III Tourney

RICHARDSON, TX (11.09.15) - After claiming its third American Southwest Conference title in program history, the UT Dallas men's soccer team will open 2015 NCAA Division III National Tournament Saturday at 11 a.m. with a first round game at regional host Trinity University in San Antonio.

The Comets (15-3-3) will have the opportunity to avenge of its three regular-season losses in the first round as UTD dropped a 2-1 overtime decision at home to Trinity on Sept. 13. After the loss to the then No. 6-ranked Tigers, the Comets posted a 11-game unbeaten streak which included nine consecutive wins. Trinity, currently ranked No. 4 nationally, will enter the national tournament with a 19-2 overall record. In the other first round game in San Antonio, No. 9 Whitworth University (16-1-1) will face No. 25 University of Redlands (16-3-2) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The two winners will play on Sunday at 1 p.m. to advance to the round of 16.

UTD its a nine-game winning streak to climb to the top of the ASC standings and into the top 10 of the NCAA D-III coaches poll but, posted just a 1-2-1 mark over the final four games of the regular season to slip to second place in the league. The Comets' have relied heavily on their defense in 2015, amassing a school-record tying 13 shutouts and boasting a league-best 0.60 goals against average. After a 2-1 win over Concordia Texas in the semifinals of the ASC Tournament, the Comets battled host Texas-Tyler to a scoreless draw through two overtime periods before claiming the league crown 6-5 in a penalty kick shootout.

The Comets rolled off four straight wins to open the season, including a season-opening 2-0 win over Texas-Tyler, however the loss to Trinity and a scoreless draw with Austin College (Sept. 15) gave UTD a 4-1-1 mark through six games. The Comets then posted nine straight victories including the first six in conference play before struggling with Ozarks in a 1-1 draw on Oct. 22. UTD then fell 3-2 at Tyler (Sept. 29) before closing out ASC play with a 7-0 home win over Louisiana College. Resting the majority of their starters, the Comets dropped their regular-season finale, 3-0, to Belhaven.

Sophomore Danny Meyer leads the way offensively for the Comets with 12 goals and 27 points, earning ASC Offensive Player of the Year honors. Senior Jordan Rubel is second on the team with six goals while sophomore Isaac Urcuyo is third with five goals. Rubel, Urcuyo and junior defender Sam Konstanty, the ASC's Co-Defensive Player of the Year, joined Meyer as first team All-ASC selections. Konstanty, sophomore Andrew Jenson and junior Kevin Whatley each have a team-best four assists.

Junior goalkeeper Joseph Weber boasts a 13-2-3 record this season with a league-leading seven shutouts to his credit. Weber leads the ASC with an 0.58 goals against average and has a 82.8 save percentage. As a team, the Comets rank first in the ASC in goals (47) assists (35) and points (129).

UTD will be making its fourth-ever trip to the NCAA D-III National Tournament, also earning the ASC's automatic berth in 2004 and 2007 and collecting the program's only at-large selection last fall. The Comets are 1-3 all-time in the event, claming the program's first tournament win last season, a 2-0 home win over Pomona-Pitzer. All three of UTD's national tournament losses have come against Trinity.
