Comets Suffer First Loss Of The Season, Fall At Centenary, 66-57

SHREVEPORT, LA (12.20.15) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team's six-game winning streak to open the 2015-16 season came to an end Sunday night with a 66-57 road loss at Centenary College in non-conference action.

The Comets (now 6-1) led for most of the opening half and in the early stages of the second period for the host Gents made a late run. Leading 35-26 at the break, thanks to a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Ben Smith, the Comets watched their lead slip away over the first seven minutes of the final half before Centenary evened the game, 44-44, on a jumper by Treylan Matthews with 12:42 remaining.

The host Gents would then grab their first lead of the second half on their next possession, 46-44, on a jumper by Travion Kirkenoll. The two teams then traded leads three times before Centenary would secure the lead for good with 5:09 left on a three-pointer by Kendall Demouchet. Demouchet's trey would spark an 11-3 run over the next three minutes as the Gents extended their lead to 60-52 on a Kirkendoll three with 2:16 on the clock. UTD climbed back within five points after a Caleb Banks lay up with just over a minute to play, but the Comets would not get any closer.

Banks led the Comets with 16 points, hitting 6-of-12 shots from the field, while adding six assists and three rebounds. Reagan Keogh and Kyle Coulter eached added 11 points while Dapo Ogunfeitmi finished with eight points. Coulter recorded his first "double-double" of the season, grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds. The Comets shot 40.7 percent (22-of-54) from the field, making 6-of-27 three-pointers (22.2%), and were just 7-of-16 (43.8%) from the foul line.

For Centenary (now 7-3), Kirkendoll finished with 28 points while Matthews added 19 points and Demouchet had 13 points as the trio accounted for 60 of the Gents' 66 points. Centenary shot just 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the field, making 8-of-23 three-pointers (34.8%), and made 10-of-14 free throws (71.4%).

Sunday's game wrapped up the Comets' slate of games during the fall semester. UTD returns to American Southwest Conference action Saturday, Jan. 2, as the Comets host Howard Payne. Game time is 4 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
