Tyler Dauer Blanks Whitman, 5-0, As Comets Pick Up 1st Win Of Season

FRISCO, TX (02.13.15) - UT Dallas senior Tyler Dauer tossed the first shutout of his career Friday night, lifting the Comets to a 5-0 win over Whitman College (WA) at Dr. Pepper Ballpark.

Dauer scattered three hits in the gem - two in the 4th and one in the 6th - and fanned 12 Whitman batters to lead UTD to its first win of the 2015 season. UTD will continue its weekend tournament in Frisco Saturday afternoon with a 5 p.m. matchup with Carleton College (MN). Carleton dropped its season opener Friday, 3-1, to Hendrix College (AR).

The Comets (now 1-4) opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as Jimmy Norris led off the game with a double to left and later scored on an an RBI single by Brandon George, giving Dauer all the offense he needed. UTD tacked on two runs in the 5th with RBI hits by Haden Johnson and Norris, added a run in the 6th on a sacrifice fly by Tim Cole and completed the scoring in the 7th with a run thanks to a pair of Whitman errors.

Dauer (1-1) would record double-digit strikeouts for the fourth time of his career as he allowed just six base runners in the contest. He retired the first four Missionaries he faced before hitting a batter with one out in the 2nd. Dauer then sat down six straight batters before giving up back-to-back singles in the 4th. He allowed a single base runner in each the 5th and 6th frames before setting down Whitman in order in the 7th. After a lead-off walk to open the 8th, he did not allow another Missionary to reach base.

Norris finished the game 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored while Nolan Smith was 2-for-4 with a run.

The loss came in the first game of the year for Whitman (0-1), which had had its opening series rained out last weekend.
