Comet Men Suffer 63-58 Road Loss At ASC-Leader East Texas Baptist

MARSHALL, TX (02.14.15) - A costly turnover with just over 30 seconds left to play was crucial in the UT Dallas men's basketball team's 63-58 road loss to East Texas Baptist Saturday afternoon in American Southwest Conference play.

With the Comets trailing just 59-58 with 32 seconds remaining, ETBU's Junior Mitchell ripped the ball away from Comet Kyle Coulter and the host Tigers followed by going 4-for-4 from the free-throw line down the stretch to snap UTD's four-game winning streak. With the loss, the Comets fell to 16-7 overall (11-7 ASC) and now sit sixth in the ASC standings with two games left in the regular season. League-leader ETBU (19-4, 14-4 ASC) picked up its school-record 10th straight win and have now won 17 straight home games. The Tigers have a slim one-game lead over Mary Hardin-Baylor and Louisiana College heading into the final week of the season, vying for the right to host the ASC Tournament.

Tied 26-26 at the break thanks to a late first-half three-pointer by Jon Hatcher, the Comets would snag a 34-33 lead over ETBU with 16:11 remaining after a pair of Rafael Farley free throws. UTD led by as many as four points before the Tigers knotted the game, 39-39, on two free throws by Ahnre Gray with 13:01 left. ETBU widened its lead to six points, 45-39, after a Bret Atkins trey with 9:57 remaining before the Comets began a late rally.

The final two minutes of the game turned into an outside shooting fest for both teams. UTD took a 55-53 lead with 1:52 on the clock on a Coulter three-pointer, only to watch the Tigers get a trey from Jamil Samuel on their next possession to take back a slim advantage. Matthew Medell then answered for the Comets with another three-pointer on their next trip to put UTD back up 58-56, but ETBU's Dylan Augustine gave the Tigers the lead for good with 46 seconds left. UTD had time to answer, but the Mitchell steal ended that opportunity.

Farley led the Comets with 17 points as Coulter and Medell each finished with 12 points. Farley also led UTD with a game-high nine rebounds. Caleb Banks added seven points and a game-high seven assists.

Two days after becoming just the eighth UTD men's player in program history to top 1,000 career points, Medell moved into 7th place on the Comets' all-time scoring list Saturday. Medell now has 1,021 career points, passing former UTD great Jordan Eppink (1,010, 2006-09) on the list.

UTD will return to action Thursday at 7:30 p.m. to host Mary Hardin-Baylor before celebrating Senior Day Saturday at 3 p.m. against Concordia Texas.
