Softball Sweeps Sul Ross State To Even ASC Mark

ALPINE, TX (02.21.15) - After taking both ends of a Friday doubleheader, 3-2 and 15-3 (6), the UT Dallas softball team closed out a weekend sweep of Sul Ross State Saturday afternoon with a 4-1 win over the Lady Lobos.

The Comets (now 7-3, 3-3 ASC) are scheduled to return to action Tuesday at 10 a.m. in a non-conference doubleheader with Chapman, weather permitting.

GAME 1 - UTD 3, SRSU 2
The Comets grabbed a quick 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Aly Hudec in the 1st inning, but had to hold off a late SRSU rally in the 7th to earn a 3-2 win to open a three-game weekend series with the Lady Lobos.

Hudec's first homer of the year seemed to set the tone for the game, however, neither team would score again until the 6th inning. The Comets doubled their lead in the top of the 6th on an RBI double by Jessica Ramos, scoring Taylor Ervin. The Lady Lobos cut the lead back to a run, 2-1, in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Nicole Stoltz and would later load the bases with a one-out infield single. However, relief pitcher Megan Aragones got two quick out to help the Comets maintain their lead.

UTD added a final run in the top of the 7th on Taylor Jensen's second home run of the season to go up 3-1. The Lady Lobos answered in the bottom of the 7th with an RBI ground out by Darrian Doederlein after a pair of Comet errors, but SRSU would leave the tying run on second base.

Comet starter Sara Davison (3-1) picked up the win, giving up one run on five hits in 5.1 innings of work. Davison struck out three and issued four walks. Aragones earned her first save of the season, giving up one unearned run in 1.2 innings of relief. The Comets managed just six hits in the series opener with Jensen going 2-for-3.

GAME 2 - UTD 15, SRSU 3 (6 INNINGS)
The Comets used a nine-run 6th inning to shortened the second game of Friday's doubleheader with a 15-3 win over SRSU in six innings.

UTD plated a pair of run each in the 1st and 2nd before adding a single run in both the 4th and 5th frame to take a 6-3 lead before exploding for a their nine-run 6th. Ramos opened the scoring with a two-run single in the 1st before Kendall Moore plated Margeaux Petrash in the 2nd and later scored on a Lady Lobo error. Avery McHugh then picked up her first of two RBI in the game with a single in the 4th, scoring Petrash.

After giving up three runs on a bases-loaded triple by Stoltz in the bottom of the 4th, the Comets got back on the scoreboard with Jensen's second solo homer of the day, her third of the season. UTD then sent 12 batters to the plate in the 6th, collecting seven hits and taking advantage of two SRSU errors. The Comets used three consecutive extra-base hits late in the inning to complete their scoring, getting a two-run triple by Jordan Bratcher and back-to-back RBI doubles by Petrash and Moore.

Lauren McLeod (3-2) tossed a complete game for UTD, giving up three earned runs on three hits. McLeod struck out seven and walked three Lady Lobos. Petrash and Moore each went 3-for-3 from the eight and nine spots in the order, respectively, while Ramos and Bratcher were each 2-for-3 and McHugh finished 2-for-4.

GAME 3 - UTD 4, SRSU 1
Davison and McLeod combined to throw a one-hitter as the Comets handled SRSU, 4-1, in the series finale Saturday afternoon.

The Comets opened the scoring in the top of the 2nd with Jonelle Feikis' second home run of the year and doubled their lead to 2-0 in the 4th on a lead-off homer by Ramos, also her second of the season. UTD tacked on a third run in the 5th as Ramos singled in Taylor Ervin and completed its scoring with one out in the 7th on a double by Hudec, scoring McHugh.

Davison (4-1) earned the win, giving up a run on one hit in 5.0 innings in the circle. She fanned eight and walked three in her second win of the weekend. McLeod tossed two scoreless frames for her first save of the year, allowing just one base runner on a walk. Ramos was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
