Softball Opens Season With Road Sweep at University of Dallas

IRVING, TEXAS (02.08.15) - The UT Dallas softball team started its 2015 season off on the right foot Sunday afternoon, sweeping a road doubleheader across town at The University of Dallas, 8-4 and 9-1.

Sophomore pitchers Sara Davison and Lauren McLeod both picked up wins in their season debut for the Comets (2-0). Davison went six innings in the opener, giving up four runs on nine hits with six strikeouts. McLeod gave up just one run on five hits in her five-inning start in Game 2, striking out four Crusaders (1=3).

UTD Coach Brad Posner made full use of his roster, working 20 players into the doubleheader with multiple substitutions.

The Comets (2-0) pounded out 22 hits in the sweep, including seven doubles and a triple by Sara Navarro in Game 1. Senior Avery McHugh had five hits, including three doubles, and scored four runs.

GAME 1: UTD 8, UD 4

The Comets broke the game open with six runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings, building an early 6-0 lead and then withstanding a late charge by U. Dallas.

UTD got an RBI fielders' choice from McHugh to bring home Navarro with the game's first run in the 2nd. McHugh then tacked on another run on an RBI double from Chelsea Sartor.

In the 3rd, the Comets put together four hits. Junior transfer shortstop Taylor Jensen doubled and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Navarro later delivered an 2-RBI triple to score Jonelle Feikis and Jordan Bratcher. Morgan Anderson then drove home Navarro and UTD was in control.

The Comets it made it 8-1 in the top of the sixth when Anderson walked and later scored on a McHugh double and throwing error. Sartor then brought McHugh home with the final run.

Davison ran out of gas in the 6th after surrendering just four hits through the first five innings. The Crusaders made things interesting with a three-rally to cut the lead to 8-4, but Megan Aragones came in to toss the 7th inning and got a strikeout and two ground balls to end the game.

GAME 2: UTD 9, UD 1

McLeod and Taylor Nabors combined to limit the Crusaders to just six hits and a single run while the Comet bats pasted UD starter Elizabeth Symanski with 12 hits.

UTD got on the board in the top of the 1st with McHugh getting the first of two doubles in the game, then scoring on a wild pitch.  McHugh started off a two-run 3rd inning with another double, Aly Hudec scored on a ground out and Taylor Ervin made it all the way around the bases on an errant throw.

The Comets added single runs in the 4th and 5th with McHugh and Heather Gilbert driving in runs. UTD then put it out of reach with a three-run 6th with one run scoring on a Crusader error and two more coming home on wild pitches. Sartor drove in the final run for UTD in the 7th.

Nabors came in to pitch the final two innings for UTD, shutting out the Crusaders on just one hit.

UTD opens its home schedule next weekend with a three-game American Southwest Conference series against Louisiana College. The two teams will play a doubleheader Friday at 2 pm.
