RICHARDSON, TX (03.23.15) - The UT Dallas baseball team rode stellar pitching to a pair of one-run American Southwest Conference victories over powerhouse UT Tyler Monday afternoon.
Senior right-hander
Tyler Dauer limited Texas-Tyler to just two hits in a 1-0 win over the Patriots in the first game of a three-game series, then
Brandon Lee got some help from his defense in nailing down a 2-1 victory over the Patriots (now 14-7, 10-4) in the second game of the doubleheader.
The DH sweep made it six wins in a row for the Comets, who evened up their season record at 10-10 after a 4-10 start. UTD improved to 7-4 in ASC play. The games were pushed back two days due to rain in the Dallas area, and will conclude with the final game in the series at 1 pm Tuesday at the UTD Baseball Field.
GAME 1: UTD 1, UTT 0Dauer (3-2) struck out seven Patriots to lead the Comets to their Game 1 win and did not give up a run despite both hits coming in the UTT 5th. After Kevan House led off the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second, rightfielder
Pierce Fly picked up a Douglas Kinsey single and gunned down House at the plate to keep the game scoreless.
Meanwhile, the Comets were having their own issues getting to Patriot starter Jaime Paxton, who had lost just once this season and had also allowed just two hits going into the 6th inning. But
Jimmy Norris led off the 6th for UTD with a single up the middle and then stole second base, sliding around a tag.
Tim Cole put Comets on the corners with a bunt single, and
Brandon George then knocked in the only run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center.
Dauer then made quick work of the UTT 7th, setting the heart of the Patriot order quickly with a line drive, fly ball and strikeout to lock up the win.
GAME 2: UTD 2, UTT 1Junior transfer
Brandon Lee scattered six hits and struck out four, but kept the lid on the high-powered Patriot offense with the help of his defense. Lee delivered back-to-back strikeouts to get out of a leadoff double jam in the 2nd inning, had a leadoff runner picked off by catcher
Ryan Downs in the 4th, and a couple of defensive gems to end the 5th and 7th by shorstop
Jimmy Norris.
Norris, who scored UTD's only run in the first game, started an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play in the 5th after making a diving stop in the hole between shortstop and third base. Then, with UTT runners on second and third in the 7th, he chased down a deep popup in foul territory to get the Comets out of trouble.
The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning when UTT's Alex Bishop sent an RBI single to right field to score Logan Tucker from second. But UTD tied up the score and took a lead in its half of the frame. Freshman
Norman Cordova singled to open the inning and the Comets loaded the bases when the UTT third baseman misplayed a Norris sacrifice bunt and
Tim Cole followed with a bunt single to the same spot.
Brandon George then sent a single through the right side to score Cordova.
Brandon Clounch followed that up with the go-ahead RBI, launching a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Norris.
