Comets Can't Keep Momentum Going On Road Trip To Sul Ross

ALPINE, TX (03.28.15) - A week after sweeping UT Tyler, one of the top teams in the American Southwest Conference race, the UT Dallas baseball team had the tables turned in a three-game set at Sul Ross State, dropping all three games of the series.

The Comets (11-13, 8-7 ASC) saw their seven-game win streak snapped in a 7-4 loss Friday night, then fell 3-2 and 6-4 in the Saturday doubleheader. UTD let leads slip away in both the first and final games of the series. Sul Ross, which is not eligible for ASC post-season play, improved to 13-12 overall and 9-6 in the conference standings.

FRIDAY: SRSU 7, UTD 4

The Comets could not hold on to an early 3-0 lead as the Lobos (11-12, 7-6 ASC) rallied with all seven runs in the 5th, 6th and 7th innings to take the win.

UTD starter Tyler Dauer (3-3) suffered through one of his most difficult outings of the season, giving up six earned runs on nine hits in just a six-inning start. He struck out five, but gave up a pair of two-run home runs.

Second baseman Tim Cole was the lone Comet with multiple hits against three SRSU pitchers, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI.

UTD took an early 1-0 lead in the 1st when Cole singled and went to second on an error. He scored the game's first run on a Brandon Clounch RBI double. The Comets then made it 3-0 with two more runs in the 5th inning. Micah Easterling and Pierce Fly singled to start the frame, and Jimmy Norris later reached on a fielders' choice. Easterling scored from third base on an errant throw by the SRSU starter Justin Vajgert, and Norris followed him home on a Cole RBI.

But things began unravelling for Dauer and the Comets after that point. In their half of the 5th, the Lobos moved runners to second and third with two outs, then got a 2-RBI single to cut the score to 3-2. Shane Sawyer then launched a two-run home run to give SRSU its first lead at 4-3. The 6th inning wasn't any better as a one-our triple and another two-run homerun pushed the SRSU lead to 6-3.

The Comets got one run back in the 7th when Norris led off with a single, stole second base and was sacrificed to third. He then raced home when the SRSU catcher picked up a passed ball on a called third strike on Brandon George and fired to first base for the out. But the Lobos got that run back in the bottom of the 7th with a leadoff double, ground out and sacrifice fly for the final run of the game.

SATURDAY GAME 1: SRSU 3, UTD 2

In the Saturday seven-inning opener, starter Brandon Lee and the Comets fell behind early and could not catch up with the Lobos in a 3-2 loss. UTD stranded nine runners in the seven-inning game, scoring just two runs on 10 hits.

The Lobos took a 1-0 lead in the 1st with a leadoff single, stolen base and sacrifice fly. UTD was able to tie the score in the top of the 2nd when Pierce Fly doubled to lead off and came home on a Norman Cordova single to make it 1-1. But SRSU answered immediately with two unearned runs with two outs in the 2nd. An errant throw that would have been the third out, allowed one run to score. The Lobos then got an RBI single to take a 3-1 lead.

UTD had baserunners in each of the next three innings, but could not get a clutch hit against Lobo starter Eli Gallego, who scattered nine hits in a six-inning start. UTD did rally in the 6th, but left the bases loaded before an inning-ending strikeout. Wesley Gill scored the run after a single to left, a wild pitch and scored on a Ryan Downs RBI single. SRSU quashed UTD's last inning rally with a double play ground out.

Lee (2-1) went the distance for UTD, giving up just five hits with two strikeouts.

SATURDAY GAME 2: SRSU 6, UTD 4

SRSU rallied for five late runs in the series finale to garner the sweep, wiping out a 4-1 Comet lead for starter Aaron Bach.

With one out in the 7th, Bach gave up back-to-back hits, including an RBI triple. John Quisenberry came on in relief, but was greeted by an RBI single. After a passed ball, SRSU plated a third run on a two-out RBI single to tie the score at 4-4. But Quisenberry was greeted with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the 8th, te Lobos followed with a two-out double and two wild pitches from Michael Ward that allowed the final run to score.

UTD took a 2-0 lead with a three-hit 5th inning. Micah Easterling, Josh Covey and Jimmy Norris started the inning with three singles, two of them bunts to load the bases. Easterling came home with the first run when Brandon George was hit by a pitch. Brandon Clounch then followed with a single to centerfield to score Covey. But the threat ended with two foul popups.

After the Comets gave one of the runs back in the bottom of the 5th with a pair of hits, they built the lead back to 4-1. Downs was hit by a pitch and Easterling singled to start off the inning. Downs scored on a Norris ground out, then Tim Cole brought home Covey with a two-out single for UTD's final run.

The Comets return to action Thursday and Friday at home when they host the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
