AUSTIN, TX (03.07.15) - The UT Dallas baseball team dropped both ends of an American Southwest Conference doubleheader at Concordia Texas Saturday afternoon, 3-0 and 8-2. UTD grabbed a win over the Tornados, 6-5, in 11 innings in Friday's series opener.
The Comets (now 4-9, 2-4 ASC) returns to action Tuesday afternoon with a non-conference game with Peru State in Grand Prairie. First pitch is 1 p.m. at Quick Trip Park.
GAME 1 - CTX 3, UTD 0Concordia opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the 1st and completed the scoring with a run in the 3rd as Tornado starter Cameron Cox needed just 87 pitches to shut down the Comet lineup. Cox gave up just two hits and struck out seven UTD batters in the complete-game shutout. The Tornados got a two-run double by Connor Bertsch in the 1st and CTX added its final run in the 3rd on a wild pitch.
UTD starter
Clayton Buckner (1-2) was handed the loss, giving up two runs, one earned, on one hit before an early exit in the first.
Brandon Lee took over with one out in the 1st and finished the game, scattering five hits with one run in 6.2 innings of work. Lee struck out seven and walked three.
Jimmy Norris and
Brandon Clounch each finished the game 1-for-3 from the plate.
GAME 2 - CTX 8, UTD 2The host Tornados jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as CTX took the series finale against UTD with an 8-2 decision.
Concordia opened the scoring in the 2nd with an RBI sac bunt, but the Comets answered in the bottom of the frame with an RBI groundout by
Matthew Young, scoring
Nolan Smith. CTX, however, scored three runs in the 3rd and added another in the 4th to take a 5-1 lead. The Tornados then plated three insurance runs in the top of the 9th before UTD would add its second run in the bottom of the final frame with a run on a double play ball.
UTD managed just four hits off of two Tornados pitchers. Clounch and
Ryan Downs were each 1-for-3 while Smith and
Brandon George were each 1-for-4.
Cole Hanson (1-2) was handed the loss, giving up five earned runs on 10 hits in 5.0 innings on the mound. Hanson struck out five and walked one.
Aaron Bach, who picked up the win in relief in Friday's win over the Tornados, tossed two scoreless frames while Tristan DerMargosian and
John Quisenberry combined for the final two innings.
