RICHARDSON, TX (04.17.15) - The UT Dallas baseball team scored three runs in the 5th and used the fifth complete of the season by senior right-hander
Tyler Dauer to rally and then hold off Louisiana College, 4-3, Friday afternoon to open a three-game American Southwest Conference weekend series.
The Comets (now 19-13, 15-7 ASC) claimed their eighth straight win, four shy of the program record, and are now winners of 15 of their last 18 games after Friday's victory over the Wildcats (now 1119, 7-15 ASC). The two teams will close out the series Saturday with a 10 a.m. doubleheader at the UTD Baseball Field.
UTD opened the scoring in the 2nd with an infield single by
Haden Johnson, scoring
Brandon Clounch from third base. However, the visiting Wildcats would plate three runs in the 5th to grab a 3-1 advantage. Will Currier knotted the game with a lead-off homer in the 5th for LC, his first of the year, before the Wildcats picked up back-to-back RBI singles by Sully Martin and Mark Riendeau.
With two outs in the bottom of the frame,
Pierce Fly blasted his first home run of the season, a two-run shot down the left field line, scoring
Ryan Downs, to tie the game, 3-3. After a pair of singles by
Jimmy Norris and
Tim Cole, followed by an LC pitching change,
Brandon George gave the Comets back the lead with a bloop single to right, scoring Norris.
Dauer (6-3) scattered seven hits and gave up two earned runs as he picked up his third straight win and fifth win in last six outings. He struck out four Wildcats and issue one walk and is now one complete game shy of the UTD season mark, set by Joseph Wollscheid (2002). Dauer has already tied Wollscheid's shutout record (3) this season.
Norris and Downs each finished the game 2-for-3 while the Comets topped double-digit hits for the seventh straight outing. Eight of nine Comets in the starting lineup recorded a hit.
