RICHARDSON, TX (04.19.15) - The UT Dallas softball team used 15 hits to earn a 13-7 home win over Concordia Texas Sunday night to open a three-game American Southwest Conference series.
The Comets (now 12-18, 8-16 ASC) temporarily took sole possession of sixth place in the ASC with the win and will wrap up the series with CTX with a 12 p.m. doubleheader Monday at the UTD Softball Field. With the loss, the Tornados fell to 7-25 overall and 7-17 in ASC play. UTD, CTX and LeTourneau entered the weekend all tied for sixth place in the ASC. LeTourneau opens a three-game series at Sul Ross State Monday.
The Comets set the tone in the bottom of the 1st as all nine batters reached base in a four-run frame.
Jessica Ramos opened the scoring with a one-out, two-run double down the left field line, scoring
Morgan Anderson and
Avery McHugh. UTD added RBI singles by
Aly Hudec and
Taylor Ervin in the frame to take a quick 4-0 lead.
CTX scored a single run in the top of the 2nd before the Comets added two more in the 3rd to grab a 6-1 advantage. With two outs in the inning, Ervin was hit by a pitch and then stole second base before coming home on a
Sara Navarro double. Navarro would later score on a Tornado error.
The two teams then combined for 10 runs over the next innings as UTD maintained a five-run cushion, 11-6, heading into the 6th. In the 4th, the Comets plated their first run on a dropped pop up and then got an RBI single by Ervin. In the 5th, McHugh and Ramos hit back-to-back home runs, the fifth of the year for both. UTD then picked up two runs in the 6th on RBI singles by McHugh and Ramos, before CTX finished the scoring with single run in the 7th.
Taylor Nabors (2-0) picked up the win as she took over for Comet starter
Lauren McLeod with one out in the 2nd. Nabors would toss 2.2 innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits. McLeod re-entered the game with no outs and two runners on in the 5th to pick up her second save of the season. McLeod tossed a total of 4.1 innings, giving up three runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
McHugh and Ramos were each 3-for-5 in the game while Ervin was 2-for-3 and Navarro and
Taylor Jensen both went 2-for-4. Ramos had four RBI and two runs scored while McHugh had three RBI and two runs scored.
