RICHARDSON, TX (04.02.15) – Senior right-hander
Tyler Dauer recorded his school record-tying third shutout of the season Thursday afternoon as he pitched the UT Dallas baseball team to a 1-0 home win over Mary Hardin-Baylor to open an three-game American Southwest Conference series.
The Comets improved 12-13 overall and 9-7 in ASC play with the win, while UMHB dropped to 13-10 overall and 10-6 in ASC play. The two teams will play a 12 p.m. doubleheader Friday at the UTD Baseball Field.
Dauer made quick work of the Cru, needing just 92 pitches in a game that took less than two hours to complete. He struck out six UMHB batters, with no walks, and scattered six hits, all singles, as he improved to 4-3 on the season. Dauer did not allow more than a single base runner any inning and let just one Cru batter reach third, that coming in the 7th., Dauer became the first UTD pitcher to record three shutouts in a season in more than a decade, joining former Comets Joseph Wollscheid (2002) and Kevin McKnight (2004), who also accomplished the feat.
UTD got the scoring started with a manufactured run in the bottom of the 1st as
Tim Cole reached on a one-out bunt single and advanced to second on a four-pitch walk by
Brandon George. Cole then stole third base, allowing him to score on an infield single by
Brandon Clounch. The Comets threatened to add to their lead with two runners on base in each the 4th, 6th and 8th frames, but could not push a second run across.
Clounch finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI, adding a double in the 8th, while Cole was 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Haden Johnson was 1-for-2 and was hit by a pitch twice.
In a hard-luck loss, UMHB ace Aaron Barteau (4-1) pitched into the 8th before making his exit. Barteau gave up five hits to the Comets, striking out seven with one walk.
