Comets Take Series From McMurry With Dramatic Walk Off Win

RICHARDSON, TX (04.26.15) - The UT Dallas baseball team closed out the home portion with style Sunday afternoon, taking both ends of a doubleheader with future American Southwest Conference foe McMurry. The Comets held off McMurry, 5-2, in Sunday's opener before getting a walk-off home run by Brandon George in the series finale to rally for a 6-5 win.

The Comets (now 23-14) wrap up the regular season next weekend with a three-game ASC series at Hardin-Simmons. The two teams will play a single game on Friday at 7 p.m. before both teams close the regular season with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday. UTD currently sits third in the ASC and can finish no lower than third after next weekend's series. With three wins and a little help, the Comets could climb up to second place entering the ASC Tournament, May 6-10, in Austin.

McMurry, still in transition from NCAA Division II status, is not eligible for the ASC post-season. The War Hawks (29-11) had lost just once to ASC competition this season prior to the series with UTD.

GAME 1 - UTD 5, McM 2
Trailing 1-0 heading into the 5th, UTD plated three runs on a pair of hits and two McMurry to take the lead and never looked back as the Comets earned a 5-2 win to open Saturday's twin bill.

McMurry's Cody Howard opened the scoring in the top of the first with a two-out solo home run that wrapped around the right field foul pole, giving the War Hawks an early lead. That lead look to hold up as the Comets could not get a runner past first base through four innings. However, UTD find its stride in the 5th as it sent eight batters to the plate.

After a lead-off walk by Kaleb Robinson in the 5th, a single by Pierce Fly game the Comets runners at first and third with no outs. McMurry starter Ben Bates this plunked Bobby Garner to fill the bases with Comets. During Josh Covey's at bat, an errant pick-off throw to first by War Hawk catcher Mikal Hunter would allow Robinson to score and knot the game, 1-1. Two batters later, Jimmy Norris used a bunt single to plate Fly, giving the Comets a 2-1 advantage. Garner would later score on the second McMurry error in the frame as Tim Cole hit a one-out ground ball to the right side of the War Hawk infield, only to have Patrick Adams throw the ball away in attempt to get Norris at second base.

McMurry drew back within a run in the 6th with an RBI single up the middle by Ricky Garcia, scoring Adams, but UTD responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Robinson blasted his third home run of the season with one out in the 6th and the Comets completed the scoring with a Covey single to left, scoring Wesley Gill.

Brandon Lee (5-2) scattered six hits while giving up two runs in a complete-game victory. Lee struck out six and did not allow a walk. Norris went 3-for-4 from the lead-off spot with an RBI as the only Comet with a multi-hit game.

GAME 2 - UTD 6, McM 5
Moments after McMurry used a three-run home run in the top of the to seemingly take the series away from the Comets, George drilled his team-leading fifth long ball of the year with two outs in the bottom of the 9th to give UTD the Sunday sweep.

With the Comets leading 3-0 heading into the 7th riding a tremendous start by Aaron Bach, McMurry would score two runs in the 8th, thanks to a wild pitch and a Zack Hagan RBI single. Adams then lifted the War Hawks to a 5-3 advantage with two-run shot down the left field line, erupting the McMurry dug out and traveling fans.

However, UTD was not done as Ryan Downs opened the Comets' half of the 9th with a walk, moved to second on a passed ball, third on a Covey ground and scored on a Norris ground out to cut the McMurry lead to one run, 5-4. After a bloop single by Cole, George made his own dugout and fans erupt with the Comets' third walk-off victory in six games, a two-run shot to left center.

Bach did not factor in the decision after tossing 7.0 scoreless frames with six strikeouts and not walks while scattering seven singles. Cole Hansen took over in the 8th and gave up two runs on a hit and a walk in 0.2 innings on the mound while Michael Ward (3-0) tossed the final 1.1 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk.

Fly and Haden Johnson each went 2-for-4 in the game while George finished 1-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
