AUSTIN, TX (05.09.15) - For the fifth time in program history, UT Dallas' bid for an American Southwest Conference baseball championship ended up just short as the Comets' incredible run in the 2015 ASC Championship Tournament came to an end with a 6-5 loss to Texas-Tyler in the championship game Saturday evening at Concordia Texas' Tornado Field.
The nationally-ranked Patriots overcame an early 4-0 lead by UTD with a five-run 5th inning and held on to edge the Comets, who had rallied late for victories in their previous three games at the tournament. After dropping the first game in the tournament on Wednesday, UTD had fought its way to four straight dramatic elimination-game victories to make it back to the championship game - their sixth game in four days.
The Comets finished the season at 29-17, and have just an outside shot at an at-large bid into the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
UTD, which entered the tournament with a depleted pitching roster, somehow pieced together four wins to advance to the title game, its first since 2011. The championship game was no different, except that - this time - it was the Patriots who rallied back from the early deficit to claim the victory and their second ASC crown in the last three years.
The Comets took an quick 1-0 lead in the 1st inning after a leadoff double from
Jimmy Norris and RBI double from
Brandon George.. The Comets then made it 4-0 with a three-hit 4th inning. UTD loaded the bases with base hits from
Haden Johnson,
Brandon Clounch and a hit batter, then got a two-RBI single from
Ryan Downs.
David McKenzie followed with a sacrifice fly to score
Pierce Fly.
After shutting down the heavy-hitting Patriots with a single run through the first four innings, seldom-used starter
Nick Cummings ran into trouble in the 5th, giving up a pair of hits before leaving the game. UTT then followed with two sacrifice flies and RBI hits form Blake Bonnin and Sam Lane to take control at 6-5. UTD got one run back with a two-out 9th inning rally against Patriot closer Chad Hayes when
Tim Cole reached on an error and came around to score on an RBI single from
Kaleb Robinson.
Micah Easterling, who had already thrown twice in previous games, came in and kept the game within reach for UTD, throwing 3.2 scoreless innings to keep the Comets close.
Brandon George,
Jimmy Norris,
Tim Cole,
Ryan Downs,
Haden Johnson and pitcher
Michael Ward were named to the All-Tournament Team.
