AUSTIN, TX (05.09.15) - The UT Dallas Comets are one of just three teams remaining alive in the 2015 American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament after avenging its earlier tournament loss with a 5-4 come-from-behind win over East Texas Baptist.
The Comets (28-16), whose final elimination game did not start until 11:30 pm after multiple weather delays, scored single runs in the 7th and 8th inning to overtake the Tigers (21-22), in a game that ended close to 3:00 am. Down 4-3, UTD tied the score in the 7th with a leadoff triple by
Wesley Gill and RBI single from
Haden Johnson. The Comets then got another clutch two-out RBI hit from
Brandon George in the 8th, scoring
Jimmy Norris with the game-winner.
UTD will meet host Concordia Texas in a semifinal matchup in a game rescheduled until 12 noon Saturday. The winner advances to play Texas Tyler at 4 pm for the tournament championship with a potential "if necessary" game Sunday afternoon in the double-elimination tournament.
The win was the Comets' third straight after opening the tournament Wednesday with an 8-7 loss to the Tigers. UTD avoided elimination with wins over Hardin-Simmons, LeTourneau and ETBU.
In the deciding 8th inning, Norris singled up the middle with one out, stole second base and advanced to third on a ground out before George came through with the game-winning extra-base hit. George had been the hero earlier in the day against LeTourneau with a walk-off three-run homer to wrap up a 6-5 victory.
Senior
Micah Easterling was the hero on the mound, throwing 3.2 innings of workman-like relief, keeping the game close while the Comets engineered the rally. The two teams left a combined 21 runners on base before George had the game-winning hit. Easterling then polished off the Tigers with a strikeout and fly out to left field after the tying run reached second base with just one out in the 9th inning.
The Comets took a 2-1 lead in the 1st after starter Andrew Leilich surrendered the game's first run on a walk and single. The freshman lasted four innings in his first start of the season, scattering just two hits and striking out three.
ETBU tied the score at 2-2 in the 5th inning, but the Comets answered immediately when
Tim Cole scored after a walk and double play ball that put UTD ahead, 3-2. The Tigers scored again in the 5th, tying the score at 3-3, then went up 4-3 in the top of the 7th with a leadoff double and RBI single.
George finished the game at 3-for-4 with a run scored and 2 RBI. Norris and Johnson each had a pair of hits.
