Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Too Many Turnovers Limit Comets in Road Loss at Trinity

SAN ANTONIO, TX (11.23.16) – The UT Dallas women's basketball team limited Trinity to 30 percent shooting from the floor but could not overcome 30 turnovers in a 52-46 non-conference road loss to the Tigers Wednesday night.

In their next outing, the Comets (now 2-2) will open American Southwest Conference play when they host Ozarks next Saturday, Dec. 3. Game time is 1 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.

Defensively, the Comets played well enough to win, holding Trinity to 19-of-62 (30.6%) from the field and just 3-of-19 (15.8%) from three-point range. However, UTD was just 26.8 percent (15-of-56) and hit just 4-of-17 three-pointers (23.5%).

UTD jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead on the host Tigers, thanks to five early points from Kayla Reinhart. The Comets would hold Trinity to just 21.4 percent shooting (3-of-14) in the first 10 minutes as they finished the period with a 14-6 advantage.

However, the Comets suffered from scoring drought of 8:22 in the second quarter, allowing Trinity to take the lead. After taking a 19-9 lead with 8:33 left to play before the break, the Comets allowed Trinity to go on a 14-0 run before getting a free throw from Zavier Landry with 11 seconds on the clock. The Tigers added a late lay up to grab a 25-20 lead at intermission. The Comets were just 2-for-15 (13.3%) from the floor in the second period as the Tigers outscored UTD, 19-6, in the frame.

The Comets would draw within a point of Trinity several times before finally matching the Tigers, 32-32, on a three-pointer by Reinhart with 2:49 left in the third period. Neither team shot well in the period as Trinity took a slim 34-32 lead into the final quarter of play.

UTD grabbed its first lead since the second quarter with 4:08 left on the clock when Victoria Pena was fouled on a fast break attempt and hit both free throws to lift the Comets to a 42-41 advantage. The two teams would trade leads five times before the Tigers grabbed a lead for good with 1:29 on a pair of free throws by Allison Staley. Trinity then used a blocked shot and a three-point play by Micah Weaver on its counter attack to pull away by four points.

Reinhart led the Comets with 12 points while Micaela Gonzalez finished with nine points and Alyssa Crockett and Katie Gunther each added eight points. Reinhart and Crockett each grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
