Comet Women Open ASC Play With 70-54 Home Win Over Ozarks

RICHARDSON, TX (12.03.16) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team pulled away in the second half to earn a 70-54 home win over Ozarks to open American Southwest Conference play Saturday afternoon.

The Comets (now 3-2, 1-0 ASC) return to action Wednesday night when they host Concordia Texas in another ASC contest. Game time is 5:30 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.

Senior Kayla Reinhart led UTD in scoring for the second straight game as she finished with 18 points, while adding four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Micaela Gonzalez added 16 points and Zavier Landry had 12 points to round out the Comets in double figures.

Tied with Ozarks, 35-35, at the break, the Comets used a 16-9 third frame and outscored the guest Eagles, 19-10, in the final frame, to secure the 16-point home victory. UTD finished the afternoon shooting just 38.7 percent (24-of-62) from the field, but forced 21 UO turnovers to make up the difference. The Eagles shot 45 percent (18-for-40) from the field.

The Comets trailed Ozarks, 41-40, with 5:40 left in the third quarter before rolling off eight straight points for a 49-41 lead with 2:30 left in the period after a Kendall Festervand lay up. UTD would secure its first double-digit lead of the day with 2:07 left in the contest when Gonzalez used a lay up to lift the Comets to a 62-51 advantage. UTD would lead by as many as 17 points in the fourth.

Gonzalez ended the game with a game-high nine rebounds while Landry had seven boards and two assists. Victoria Pena came off the bench for a game-high six assists. The Comets were just 6-of-25 (24%) from three-point range and hit 16-of-22 (72.7%) free throws.
