Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Comet Men Fall at Howard Payne On Last-Second Put Back, 87-85

BROWNWOOD, TX (12.17.16) - A late three-pointer by Kyle Coulter seemingly sent UT Dallas men's basketball team to overtime at Howard Payne Saturday afternoon, but a buzzer-beating put back by the Yellow Jackets ended the game, 87-85, in a key American Southwest Conference road game for the Comets.

The Comets (1-7, 1-2 ASC) trailed HPU by eight points late but rallied to even the game, 85-85, on Coulter's third three-pointer of the game with seven seconds on the clock. Yellow Jacket Khyce Randall's game-winning three-point attempt bounced off the back of the rim but teammate Ricky Guillory corralled the rebound and nailed a jumper from the left elbow with just tenths of a second on the clock.

UTD will look to snap a three-game losing skid Monday when the Comets visit Sul Ross State in another ASC road game. Game time is 2 p.m. in Alpine.

Jon Hatcher led four Comets in double digits with 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field. Caleb Banks finished with 18 points, thanks to 7-of-8 free-throw shooting, while Coulter had 13 points and added 10 points. Coulter and Smith each grabbed a team-best seven rebounds while Banks dished out eight assists.

The Comets grabbed a 49-40 lead at the break, shooting an impressive 59.3 percent (16-of-27) from the field in the opening 20 minutes. HPU slowly pecked away at the lead until using a 7-0 run, capped by a three-pointer by Randall, to grab a 62-59 lead with 12:21 left to play.

The Yellow Jackets widened their lead to as many as 11 points with just under eight to play before UTD began a final rally. Trailing 73-62 with 7:59 remaining, the Comets used a 12-1 run over the next three minutes, clawing within two points, 76-74, after a Dapo Ogunfeitimi three-point play with 5:09 left.

Randall would hit back-to-back three-pointers to give HPU back an eight-point advantage, 82-74, with 4:17 on the clock before the Comets got a lay up from Reagan Keogh and a pair of treys from Banks to even the score, 82-82, with 2:27 remaining.

After collecting 3-of-4 free throws on their next two possessions, the Yellow Jackets led UTD by three points, 85-82, with 29 seconds left, before Coulter's late game-tying three-pointer.

The Comets ended the game shooting 50 percent from the field (29-of-58) and three-point range (14-of-28) while connecting on 13-of-17 free throws (76.5%).
